NV running a bit slow

I'm running fallout on my laptop and it runs pretty good except for a few situations, especially when I am facing like 3 or 4 NPCs, it just starts to lag pretty bad. If I post my DxDiag can someone help me optimize this? Also are there any tweak mods that will help me with this? AND I had an issue with my sound card while running oblivion because of the impact-based NPC footsteps, not sure if that relates to Fallout though.

I've never been able to get a great deal out of anyone's DxDiag reports. I can say this, there is a large difference between the drivers that are used for non-game video graphics device such as yours. You have a professional workstation type of graphics CREATION card, and for that, speed isn't a requirement. I have no idea what your card amounts to, but I will say that no cards of that type are officially supported. None of them. My guess is you have something that isn't particularly close to the performance capability suggested for this game's recommended level:


* Windows XP/Vista/Win7
* Intel Core 2 Duo processor (or the equivalent AMD Phenom)
* 2 GB System RAM
* Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 512MB RAM
(NVIDIA 8800 series, ATI 3800 series)
* 10 GBs of free hard drive space

Would lowering the texture quality fix this? I would sacrifice texture quality for extra fade distance as well. Is it possible that my sound card is slowing my computer down? The issue I had with Oblivion was similar in the fact that when i look away, straight up or down, the frame rate restores.

Hope someone can help

Hi Nicholas,
Everyone has their own 'requirements' for good game performance - mine is a very high framerate (minimum 60 fps +)
Since you have ATI professional (workstation/autocad) graphics with 512MB dedicated vid memory, your laptop has a chance at okay performance in this game.
It would be important to setup your ATI CCC properly from within Windows, before playing.
Set all 3D settings to 'Optimal Performance'.
AA and AF should be 'Application Managed'.
Catalyst AI should be 'Advanced' since recent ATI drivers now recognize the game.
Mipmap Detail Level should be 'High Performance'.
Wait for vertical refresh should be 'Off, unless application specifies'.
Adaptive AA should be enabled, but set to Performance. (You must open the full advanced CCC to adjust the Adaptive AA mode.)
Fresh reboot PC with these settings.
Hopefully your rig boots fairly clean - and you don't have all kinds of this & that running, no Quicktime etc., no updaters/scanners/messengers etc., and nothing in your 'Startup' folder.

The Game Launcher typically makes unfortunate choices when it recommends video settings for you.
(On my rig it selected some bizarre resolution below my native 1680x1050, Vsync enabled heheh, and then wanted to apply 4x AA - ridiculous!)
No AA, no AF and (most importantly) no vsync should be selected.
Now, from the Game Launcher screen you should select a very conservative video preset! But we will be adjusting some things manually in a moment...

I personally start with the 'Medium' preset.
I start by selecting this preset with the above settings, then shut down and restart the game, to ensure the settings have 'taken' and are written in the .ini file.
At this point you can go to the advanced video tab in the launcher, and set the Grass distance shorter, and all other distances longer.
I always set Distant LOD to full.
One of the important reasons for selecting only Medium preset is the Water settings - the settings applied using Medium are appropriate to water, which is an area noted to cause huge framerate drops.
You may wish to use less than the Medium preset to start with, if required to produce very high framerates on your rig.
But remember, you will be manually extending most viewing distances longer anyway...

Very high framerates and good performance are the keys to an enjoyable (and crash-free) game experience.
The game still looks FANTASTIC at reduced settings, and who cares what 'Ultra' looks like if it's a slide-show, heheh... right?
So many people with big huge egos are suffering terrible performance and crashes! But of course they wouldn't dream of setting below 'Ultra'.
Plus 8xAA! Plus vsync!! LoL, then it's "hey how come this game is crappy, it's so crappy it runs like feces. Stupid Beth, stupid crappy game".
In order to actually enable vsync, your frames per second must NEVER fall below 60 fps (or whatever your monitor refresh is).
Therefore, if you are getting 200 fps (max), 100 fps (avg) and 60 fps + (min) you could in fact enable vsync.
However this does not describe too many people!

Sorry for writing a novel :shrug:
Anyway the key points for top-quality performance are all here.

It is important when considering what any video graphics device is capable of, to pay attention to what counts, and ignore the extraneous factors, added for marketing allure, only. GPU core speed, VRAM speed, count of shader units, and memory system bandwidth are all important. Compared to those, the total amount of VRAM attached to a card means VERY little. It's usually just there to attract the buyer, and is hardly used in games for various reasons.

Someone could visit NotebookCheck.Net and see if it's listed there, and what it is compared to. All kinds of low end devices, both regular Radeons, and these work station Fire cards, are available in a wide range of performance levels, and a Low Level card probably cannot use more than 256 MBs on its very best day. Mainline, medium level cards usually have 128 bit memory systems and medium speed RAM. The result is a memory bandwidth that only occasionally puts 512 MBs to work, let alone any more than that. But that's fine, since the average LCD display doesn't have the kind of high resolution capability that demands 512 MBs and upward. For the large, high resolution displays, a High End card with high memory bandwidth is required.

I really think that if the author of this thread had chosen to spend the extra cash (a couple of thousand, just for the card) for a high end Workstation card, he would know what he had bought, certainly.

P. S. (in an Edit) OK, I broke down and visited Notebookcheck myself. The author's graphics is a long in the tooth part from three years ago, equivalent to the Radeon HD 3650, so it's got the potential of running moderately well, with the right mix of Medium image quality settings and Medium Screen Resolutions,

Here is the Radeon version side by side with the minimum Radeon named in the game requirements:

And THAT comparson only means anything, if there's not a gross difference in drivers between the Fire GL and the Radeon, and there usually is quite a difference there.

Thanks Gryphon, I followed you instruction and the game runs smooth now. I have questions though. When in the advanced options I have the texture detail set at high (Large in game right?) but the textures look so awful, i can't even read the words on the Pip-Boy's bottom buttons, how can I make this look better? Also the Fade settings are really low by default on the in game settings, can you explain to me what each of those and the LOD fade options do?
