I had a dragon kill the blacksmith and his wife in Riverwood. That was my favorite place to do my smithing too.

Funny, upon hearing the news I dashed to Riverwood to attend the funeral and Alvor and Sigrid were alive and well and denied ever seeing a dragon.

It's lame how the kids aren't sent to an orphanage.

Telling me. Next thing you know there will be rumours of a childrens gang doing mercenary work for huge amounts of sweet rolls.

In this case I like to think that she has learned a few things from her dad probably general iron tool repair and construction and horseshoes, plus she has a home and a cousin (or was it uncle?) as well as a close knit community to help her out so it's not like she absolutely needed to be sent to an orphanage.

I had Alvor and his wife die to a dragon too.

Maybe they're the only ones who a) fight and B) are not immortal.

Because he is the only guy who is:

1) without a bow
2) doesn't run away

Yes theres a very strong flavor of that in Skyrim where the children from a very young age are taught to be responsible and set on a trade. Many times i've seen children commenting on helping their parents as if its a great thing to be doing though alot of work.

The orphanage at riften doesnt even have any kids in it anymore in my game. The only person still there is the lady who wasn't a ho to the children.

Those kids seem to be proud of what their parents do, ready to help out and take up the craft. Unlike the kids of today who dislike anything their parents like, don't want to help out and want to something completely opposite of what the parents do :P

I want to give Breezehome to a beggar. When that happens, you can have your mean old orphan mechanics.

I feel for Dorthe,i would adopt her if i could sure i would not be around much but it would give Lydia something to do.Upon returning to Riverwood she didn't seem to bothered about her situation.

Same happened to me. Only Alvor died.
I looted Alvor and picked up his house key. That night I paid his widow a visit using the key to the house.... and there she was sitting at the table with another guy visiting her! WTF. She does not wait long hey?!
