Is NV a safe to buy yet?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 1:19 pm

I want to get NV but the 'word on the street' is the game is bugged all to hell. I see there have been patches but that doesn't do much to convince me. I plan on playing it on my PC. Is the game patched enough so I can play it without constant crashing and various other game-breaking bugs I hear about?

I'd say it was fine to buy on release, I mean, there are bugs, but I'm pretty sure the majority is just quiet and doesn't have to deal with the horrible ones. Also, I believe the PC is less buggy than on the consoles.

If your perception are the cyberboards, then this game is buggy. However my game and several of my real world friends, mom and dad included, have had no problems (PC and 360 for this informal poll). 5,000,000 copies shipped and the number of threads in the hardware section are less than what we had at the Fallout 3 release. Personally, I have had two quests wonk on me, they were side quests, and the couple of other times that a quest blew up on me, a reload of an earlier save fixed that. I have lost one companion once, but a recent patch made finding them easier if that happens (I think most of the time they get lost is either we don't pay attention when we go to a new cell and not notice they did not travel or move with us or they get stuck and we don't notice)

So, I would not say the game is unplayable or a bugfest. I will say it does have some issues, but those are being addressed as we speak. However I have more than 60 hours in, I am in the third act of the Main Quest and have 60% of the side quests done. So far the game has been an enjoyable experience for me.

No major bugs for me on two different PCs (a toshiba laptop with a nividia card, and a gateway desktop with a ATI card).

GET IT.

PLAY IT.

LOVE IT.

Alright, sounds like the complaints about bugs were exaggerated. Think I'll grab this off Steam today, thanks for the replies. :)

PC version has been patched as well. Plus you have console commands to fix stuff if it breaks. And my personal experience was very good (except for some crashing, but that's probably because my PC blows). So I would say get it.

Do note that someone is going to say they have game breaking bugs, and another person is going to stand next to them and say they have no bugs at all. Complaints of bugs are not overblown. That said, I've had a buggy but overall enjoyable experience so far (over 100 hours). Every time I play I suffer at least one random CTD and lever action rifles are nigh unusable - which unless they've done it secretly through Steam, have yet to fix the previous patch that broke them worse than they were originally (actually it spread the problem to other weapons like the hunting shotgun too).

Personally, I would wait for one more patch, then go for it.

What street do you live on? I've never lived in a city that had more than one or two people I came into contact with that liked games like Fallout.

My only problem with this game so far has been a crash to the desktop several times per two hour sessions. A bit of a drop in framerate now and then and that is about it. Nothing that makes me crazy and I am enjoying the game quite a lot.

I'm nearing the end of my 2nd play-through, not quite 200 hours into the game yet.

So far a grand total of 10 crashes to desktop - which (for me at least) is rock solid stability. A few more crashes now with ~10 mods running, but that's not surprising - its still early days for modding.

There are still plenty of quest and logic bugs that I hope are fixed in the next big patch release. We have heard that it's coming soon. I suspect after that patch, the game will be close to its "final" cut.

It's a damn fine game today IMHO, well worth the money.

I bought it at launch pre-loaded on Steam.

I crashed about 2 or 3 times when I first started because I was overclocked too high. I adjusted the settings and then after 110 hrs of gameplay (1920x1080 resolution on my laptop, all detail settings maxed except water refracting/resampling, using 4GB exe loader and d3d9.dll) on my first playthrough (still not completed), I only found one area where the game would crash (vault 11 when a mantis lunges at you - this only happens in one specific spot by the entrance to the reactor area if you are using melee weapons with super slam perk, by switching to ranged weapons, the crash is averted).

Other than that, it has been only extremely minor glitches like a few NPCs or creatures blending into the terrain. Absolutely nothing that hindered gameplay.

Absolutely it's ready for purchase and I highly recommend the game. If you liked FO3, or Oblivion, you will enjoy this game very much.

Taking into account the amount of playable, enjoyable game time, compared to the purchase price, this game is an incredible value, especially compared to other RPGs like ME1/2, The Witcher, Bioshock 1/2, KOTOR 1/2 - all these are great games but they are designed to be knocked out in a weekend or two with very limited replay ability.

With Fallout New Vegas, you can either play through several times allying with different factions, or you can go the scenic route as I have done and your very first playthrough can last hundreds of hours if you enjoy exploring the wastes. There are so many rich, interesting characters and little bits of story that you only find when you explore all the different locations.

I recommend very hard + hardcoe mode, plus installing the mod for "Harder hardcoe Rates" - this makes you hungry sleepy and thirsty frequently and is not very realistic, but makes it the game so much more balanced and enjoyable compared to FO3. Food and drink items actually have a really purpose and significance, while in FO3 they were just useless junk that weighs you down. I also recommend not using fast travel, just wander the wasteland and you will find so many interesting locations and new characters during each trip to and from the Strip.

EDIT: BTW, if you decide to use the 4GB exe loader, keep in mind you cannot use FRAPS - FRAPS attempts to lock certain files used by the 4GB exe loader resulting in a crash.

Sure it's still moderately bugged but it hasn't stopped me. It's a great game regardless.

I've encountered several of the most severe glitches: I've been locked out of the Strip, stuck inside the Lucky 38, and had one main quest totally blown by a programming oversight ("Oh My Papa" MUST be started before doing "Don't Make a Beggar of Me" if you want to complete "Oh My Papa" correctly). Nevertheless, not a single one of these issues has proven game-breaking or ruined the experience for me. I'm playing on the 360. As with any sandbox game, I advise using multiple saves and saving often.

3 playthroughs lost due to corrupted gamesaves....

over 70 hours lost..

even with avoiding all the "trouble" spots i.e. vaults, lucky 38, come fly with me etc etc

All of you out there that have NOT had a game ending bug, CONSIDER YOURSELF VERY LUCKY

can you let us know the specs for the computer are you playing it on? (or is it Xbox version?)

I'm surprised to hear that it's been so problematic for others.

I had a gamesave problem on the first and second day after launch because there was a conflict with the steam cloud saving function that resulted in duplicate save games. Bethesda released a patch on the second day that disabled the steam cloud saving function and I had no problems with save games after that.

Honestly it is the most buggy game I have ever played. But it is also the most fun game I have played since FO3. I would say fun-as-hell & bugged-all-to-hell are both true about FONV. I have not played it as much as I planned to becuase after two playthroughs I decided to wait for a patch. Personal choices.

Many of the minor bugs can be fixed with mods if you've got the PC version.

It's an amazing game and with my now modest gaming rig, I can play on high settings with very very very little lag. There are still some problems, but none are as annoying as I've experienced with FO3, and I started playing FO3 after the Mothership Zeta DLC was released.

I'd say bugs aren't too bad, and the bad ones are rare. Get it.

PC version has been patched as well.

Yep...my lever-action weapons worked fine too, until they patched in a lockup on reloading that I'd never experienced.

Still waiting on the "patch to fix the patch" so I can actually play my cowboy character.

Other than that specific-character-breaker, nothing out of the ordinary for me- only the sporadic CTDs that are staples of anything with the two names "Bethesda" and "Gamebryo" combined on it.

Then get it. I rarely experienced crash-to-desktops, but they did happen. Fortunately, all the auto-saving going on made that a whole lot less painful than it could have been. Whatever other bugs I ran into, which were few and far between, were quickly and easily fixed by downloading fan-made mods/patches from New Vegas Nexus. :fallout:

Well, I bought it and played for a few hours with no problems at all. It took about 20 minutes to get svcked into NV as much as I did with FO3 which I played religiously, really glad I bought it. Bethesda has yet again delivered an awesome RPG. :)
