Anyone know of a safe place to store loot in the Villa? I want to drop off the gold before looking around some more.

Have you tried reloading?
Or get the companions in a different order?
Maybe you need to get Dog out, or maybe God.
Have you tried activating the hologram by standing in front of the fountain?

I used one of the garbage cans outside the buildings around that square to store stuff. Had a scare once when I forgot which one and thought they had reset but the one I used held my stuff for the whole DLC. You can also go back to the casino to pick stuff up (I used a suitcase at the Reception desk), gamble or cash in chips if you need to. When I finally left I had 3200 lbs of stuff. I missed a couple of things like the snow globe and the code for the mod for the BAR, but I was pretty much done at that point.

You could...but it will be a pain to pick it up again. I'd just store it in the garbage can to the left of the exit to the Mojave

If you're just looking for a place to dump your gold for a while, you don't need storage. I dropped all my gold (all at once) in front of the exit. It fell in a single brick. Explored for an hour or so to tie up loose ends, then grabbed the gold and headed back to the wasteland.

Drop everything in the fountain. On one guy I had all the gold, 200 throwing spears, 20 gas bombs, an ungodly amount of knife spears, 20 bear trap fists, you get the idea. Its perfectly safe to drop everything. No one picks the stuff up, and you wont have to worry about resets like containers.

Ther's a trick to it that's mentioned in another thread. But no, you can't come back once that's done. You can go into the Casino still, but there's no way to get back into the vault and haul out the gold once he's dead.
