[REQ] Sandstorms. Anyone able to toy with this?

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 5:02 am

I have had a bit of a poke around the CK and after a while found the weather resources, but what looked to be a fairly simple idea is a bit more complex than I suspected (for me at least). I am currently doing quite a number of hours a day getting and testing region settings for Mesogea and doing other 3d stuff etc so have no time to work on sandstorms. As other mods are likely to use them I wondered if anyone with a bit more expertise or with a preference for this kind of thing, might take a look at it and see what can be made in a simple plugin that could then be used as a broader modders resource.

I am region editing the desert so would be in a good position to test it. Is anyone able and willing?

I second this. Morrowind is going to need an ashstorm resource, and a sandstorm could also be useful for other mods, such as the multiple Elsweyr mods.

I have done something like that in my old Mod for Oblivion DUNE may be you want to take a look at those effects there but I have no idea if those woudl work in skyrim as well ...

and honestly I do not remember how all that was done I think Midas magic helped me with those ....

I remember your Dune mod, and had a custom resource done for mesogea in Oblivion, that I think was also released as a modders resource anyway. It looks to me as if Skyrim is a bit different.

Wouldn't it just be a simple case of using the same mechanic used for snow storms but use different meshes and textures?

No idea, I'm not too good at that kind of stuff, so asked if anyone else could take a look at this as a modders resource.

Im having enough trouble getting the LOD to be half decent for custom cliffs and mountains. Bethesda really did go to town on making this difficult. I am currently trying to trick the game by moving a mesh from one to another nif. Thats proving hard too. A very steep learning curve.

I've messed around with a fake sandstorm modifying fused effects and with textures, but I haven't tested it yet. I think the beauty of it is that you can add them to separate locations not interfering with the Vanilla game. I'm sure others have done the same. Still gonna do a quick run of it and test, though.

Messing with the snow doesn't seem to work too well, thinking I might have missed something.

Bethesda should start answering the modders here instead than the bloggers reviewing the "cool" small mods on the web !

Agreed. Post negative comments about it on the review discussions. One dog cant fight a lion, but twenty of them will bring it down.

I kinda created a decent effect without using snow weather to edit as it doesn't look right. It looks like sand particles blowing around along with fast wind/fog which looks like dust. It could work, but the only problem is I don't know how to get it heavy enough. It's a little too light at the moment. I also wonder if higher resolution textures would make the particles stand out more enough to make a good difference.

Looks like we are making a bit of progress now. Ive also managed to raise the quality of the close up LOD by texture manipulation and fooling the game into using a high quality mesh for supposed lower quality LOD. Have you looked at how the sandstorm effects worked in Oblivion? I dont understand it, but you might have an idea.
