Savos Aren wasting your time.

So what I'm wondering is why Savos Aren acts like he doesn't know where the Staff of Magnus is, yet it is revealed near the end of the Winterhold quest that he knew where it was.

He could've just told you right off the bat.

college of winterhold questline is full of fillers.

Yeah, I guess maybe he didn't dragonborn to know straight away. You weren't exactly the highest ranking person at the college when he was still alive.

Hmm, well let's have a look at the circumstances.

- When you find out about the staff, the thalmor guy hasn't started messng with the device.
- Aren probably doesn't want to face up to his past and hopes you're wrong and lets you doddle off to mzulf
- On returning, Aren is promptly killed, though has apparently come to terms with his past and left the instructions with the Master wizard

The dike move part then is that he let you wander off to a dangerous ruin to search for it, though his desire to cover up the past is understandable.

He did sworn an oath to imprison forever the monster, who killed all his friends. Although how he did that and who are the two enthralled wizards are beyond my guessing.

The thing that bothers me about the Arch-Mage is he looks like the devil. I swear every time I spoke to him, I thought he would say "Sure, I can do that for you, in exchange for your mortal soul !"
