Science Fair Project Ideas

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 8:38 am

Hey guys, I'm currently a Junior in High School (11th grade) and am taking Physics Honors, we are currently required to participate in the Science fair. My teacher said that our project doesn't have to be a physics project and can be something like engineering, psychology, environmental or something, just need to know that it isn't limited to physics. The projects still needs to be up to snuff for the class so it can't be something elementary.

Can any of guys help me out on what to pick? Perhaps something even you did in the past.

Lasers.

Any idea on what to do with those lasers?

@crippknottick

For some reason, I feel that the wiki page doesn't make it seem harder than it really is, and that I can't do it...

With frickin' lasers man.

I will find you a video demonstration or something similar like the polarized lenses erasing information. It's pretty cool and pretty simple.

EDIT- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEaecUuEqfc

The video is about an hour long, it's very informative and you'll understand it better if you watch it all. But jump to 13min 55sec to see the easy experiment. Watch the whole video later to understand exactly what Dr. Ron Garret just did with those sheets of polarized film.

Make a potato battery.

Bonus points if it can power an insane rogue AI with a penchant for deadly neurotoxin.

Then feed it to a shark, so it can shoot lasers out of its mouth.

I would say it depends upon what you want to go with since it doesn't have to deal with physics in particular. What would you personally enjoy doing for a science fair project?

Did the science fair as a freshman in Highschool where I studied the effects of egg whites and egg yolks on tomato plants. Figured that the protein rich material of egg whites had a potent nitrogen content which could lead to better plant development. As a result the tomato plants which thrive on nitrogen responded well to the egg whites growing twice as big as the once exposed to egg yolks and just straight water.

Best advice I can offer is study what's going on in the world right now. See what the "hot" topic being studied right now is and see if you can do something along those lines. Right now one thing i'm finding fascinating myself is the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6SnvRzNCpo cloak using thermal conductive properties. As noted in the description of the video it almost acts like a mirage bending light.

Potato battery powered baking soda volcano that shoots lasers, attached to a mech suit, worn by a shark, with a portal gun.

You win first place for enternity.

Now this one is really cool, definitely look into it.

Thanks for the advice, but I just want something easy to do that looks complicated :D

Or, better yet, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schr%C3%B6dinger%27s_cat

It's an easy enough project, just get a cardboard box and a stuffed cat to illustrate the experiment. ;)

Modify HIV virus to be airborne, then release it to the wild.

Take that, skeptics.

Other than that, one more vote for the lousy but reliable Potato Battery.

Ahh the old ice skating up a hill routine ehh :P

Could go into heat distortion of lightwaves like you see on a hot rooftop showing what causes it and having a hypothesis on how to replicate it in different ways I guess. The railgun/magnetic acceleration gun (M.A.G.) might be another trick it's relatively easy to do if you get your hands on linear actuator *think that's what they are called*. Just modify it so the thing goes one way instead of reversing polarity to create the back and forth motion. Think there's some old bells that use little LAs to make the clinging sound which could be use to represent an idea.
