Seasonal change idea

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 3:53 am

In the gamejam video, we were shown "seasonal foilage", a feature that made the world change depending on the season: areas that don's usually have snow gets snow in the winter, trees got more leaves during the summer, and so on.

It would be awesome if this was added to the game. However, there is one thing that I think would be a very nice addition to this feature.

Before I start: I can only base this on my own experience (obviously), and since Skyrim has a sub-arctic climate like the regions around the pole circle (Scandinavia, Canada + Alaska, Siberia...), I'm going to base my knowledge on the weather we have in Sweden, but my research shows that my statements are true for the other regions as well.

As you may know, northern countries experience a great change in the hours of daylight during different seasons. The summer nights are extremely short, the sun goes down late and the nights aren't dark. The days starts to become shorter (lightwise) during the fall though, and in the winter the nights are longer and the days are short (so it's the opposite of the summer days). Here in Sweden (middle Sweden, not the most northern part), a typical winter day has light from about 9 a.m. until about 4 p.m. (about 7 hours), but I suppose that the times are more extreme in the more northern regions. In the spring, the days starts to become longer and the nights shorter again.

The point of this topic is that I think this element of day/light balance change would be a nice addition to the seasonal foilage of Skyrim. I'm not sure if it contradicts the lore in some way, but I don't believe so. I believe this addition would make the seasonal foilage a bit more interesting, as well as it would make the difference between seasons greater. I assume that places like Winterhold will have constant snow, so I guess this would be a way to notice the change in all of Skyrim.

Do you think it would be a good idea?

It would be nice if the foliage changed by season, because if you look at it when your in frostfall wouldn't you want a autum themed look going on?

I rather they dont waste their time on stuff like this. I would take added content over things that only make a visual difference. Off topic, i live in middle Sweden too :D

It would be a nice touch, but it depends on how easy to implement it would be. If it would take a lot of time and resources I'd rather they concentrate on more original content.

Edit: I know it was in the Gamejam vid, but we only saw brief glimpses.

And that one guy could be used adding, say, another variation of iron armour.

oh wait, failure on my part. He could add a new sword instead of adding seasons.

It did rain a lot more in the TES equivalent to April, though, or maybe that was coincidence.

On topic: I don't think it would take that much time to add this as well if they are going to add seasonal change. And since some things are different at day and at night, like vampires' health not regenerating at day for example, I guess it wouldn't just be visually.

And maybe it's just me, but I think the visuals are one of the best things in Skyrim
