5 second freezes from excessively large savegame files

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 12:56 am

Does anyone here know how to get your save file sizes down? One of my saves went from about 3 Mb to 71 Mb and the game started lagging all the time everywhere. I'm fairly sure nothing else would be causing the freezing but it's making the game unplayable.

savegame bloat, sorry to say, little you can do at this point. Mods exacerbate the problem.

I still have a backup save that would only lose 2 hours of progress. Do you know which type of mods cause this easily? I think I was using a fire spell that left many burnt marks on the ground and the game started lagging after that.

Well this isn't gonna help, but it can be pretty much any sort of mod that leaves something in the game world to be honest.

I did see somewhere that sleeping for 30 days in a player house would reset all cells that would reduce the save file size but after trying that in the Hall of Attainment in the College of Winterhold that didn't really help because it went down by 0,1 Mb.

EDIT: I can't even launch the game anymore. Fantastic patch.

Are you sure it's the patch?
Savegame bloat is not patch dependent.

Well this has never happened to me before using multitudes of different mods but right now the game having CTDs on the menu screen is a bigger problem, I had it first when the patch downloaded then it started working, I got the savegame bloat and now it's doing this again.

71 MB? I have a character that played 340 hours and the last save only reached 12.4 MB. That definitely sounds like a glitch you can only work around by loading an older save.

This. OP I think the problem was there to begin with, the patch just happened to get released.

I say that because I've been using the patch since beta and haven't had a problem. Using a few dozen mods aswell.

The best thing to do is load an earlier save, and if you can be bothered, maybe try and backtrack/repeat what you did to see if you find the exact cause.

This is exactly what I was about to do (backup save is less than 5 Mb) until my game didn't bother to launch anymore. It crashes right after the Bethesda logo screen when it switches to the main menu with the "Skyrim has stopped working" message.

EDIT: I think the freezing started when I left an excess amount of decals that still haven't been cleared out because I failed in reseting cells by sleeping 30 days, I could've done it in the wrong place. I had my decal quantity setting on medium and even with that setting there were alot of marks from all kinds of effects left everywhere.

I could try setting decals to none and trying to reset all cells again.

I can guarantee that any bloating is mod-related (probably an errant script). Do you have an anti-bloat mod in your load order (USKP, Mart's Antibloat mod, etc.)

No I don't. Are those mods you listed recommended to be always used with any mods to avoid any possible bloating? I still can save my character with a small 2 hour progression loss if I could just get the game to launch and try one of those mods. With the SKSE launcher it skips the Bethesda logo, goes to the menu and crashes instantly when I load any save.

I dont think SKSE skips the Bethesda logo? As far as i know the skipping of that is an ini tweak. Have you tried deleting and regenerating your ini files?

And yeah, those two mods are recommened, especially the USKP. However, if you have skyrim 1.6 do not download and use USKP! At the moment it is incompatible with patch 1.6.

Well I got those two mods and updated my categorized favourites menu to get the game to finally launch and it seemed to work altough the freezes still occured.

If your on patch 1.6, I would uninstall USKP, its ha been confirmed to break quests due to dialogue issues.

Glad to hear you can launch. Regarding cell resets, to do it properly, you have to wait 31 days in a cell that is totally divorced from the worldspace, and is flagged "never resets". The easiest place is breezehome in whiterun. If you have not yet bought it, or cant get there because of crashes, use console commands. You can find the commands online easily on how to teleport to inside breezehome.

Alright I'll try that, thanks.

EDIT: I slept over 31 days in Breezehome, teleported back to Whiterun and after saving there the size went down from 72,3 to 67,5 Mb.

Freezing is still there, loading takes long, saving takes long and uh.. also Vilkas or the guy who checks if you're worthy enough to join the Companions keeps opening a dialogue with me at the place where the lagging started when I sort of killed him.
