Self Defense with a car?

Was reading http://www.baynews9.com/article/news/2011/october/333509/Arrest-made-in-USF-student-armed-robbery about a university student who was sitting in their car and got robbed. I'm quite curious if that person put their car in reverse then backed up then put it into drive mowing down one of the assailants if this would be classified as "Self-Defense." Or would the person be charged with attempted murder or some such trumped up charge.

*Note: Not getting into politics here just wondering about self-defense and what some states and/or countries consider legal defense of one's well being.*

I exited a pet store (had just bought the son's snake some feeder mice.) I got into my car, started it, bent over to make sure the mice were stable, and a man climbed climbed onto me, into my car and informed me I had to listen to him. OH HELL NOES. I shoved him, slammed the door on him, slammed the gearshift into reverse, peeled back and turned the car so that I could escape. I then proceeded to advance, and he jumped aside. He was still screaming "[censored]"at me when I drove off. I dialed the 5-0 and the store, who had also dialed the 5-0. Cops did not apprehend him, nor give me any grief about how I handled it. Sane and law abiding citizens do not try to carjack you and take your money. In that split second when I left the door open to secure the mice, he could have killed me.
I fully expected to be shot in the head when I drove off.
I also live in Florida. We have a castle law, and you may use excessive force in public standing your ground if the situation warrants it.

I am so sick of Roz and "Just call Gary heeehheeee" commericals.
