Septims!

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 3:31 pm

I often read that ppl have managed to amass huge qty of septims.

I however rarely have more than a few thousand (thief role plays are the exception). I've developed many RP restrictions which prevent me from amassing money. They include being a drunk, no looting of the dead (priest builds) carry weight restrictions (all characters), eating three times a day, sleeping at Inns, no lock picking (unless RP permits it) donations amongst others. Favoirite RP was a drunk monk, was always broke and often had to sleep rough.

Anyone else impose similar restrictions? And if so what are they? I've been kinda limited as I play on PS3.

I don't have so much restrictions for my part. I did had a totally non-violent priest character on morrowind but it's absolutely not fun on skyrim so I replaced it by a thief/merchant/crafter "non violent" (well he can slit your throat in your sleep and send his mercenary on your face but that's pretty much it) but obviously, despite not doing a lot of dungeon this character is tremendously rich.

My warrior or my mage never picks any lock but apart from that I don't impose myself weight restrictions (But I do like a good "gold and arrow weight" mod)

Guess the lock pick restriction is a good one. No chests or room access does prevent you from gaining gear and coin, means you have to sink money into merchants for items.

People are always saying that they have too much money ... But my characters are always broke. It's taking my Mage forever to save for Proudspire Manor!

Yeah I know it's why I asked the question. Guess if you collect everything you find, steal, open chests, craft and never spend on food drink then you would be incredibly wealthy. But that breaks RP for me so i rarely have enough cash to buy the place in Whiterun.

go for it if you have $800 to spend to get it up to good skyrim specs...i'd like to go pc but my skyrim is ready to play out the box on my xbox, no upgrading needed so im good.

i dont have the septims to spend on building a good pc just for 1 or 2 games (total war would be the other game)

I do those things in the OP, well most of them. Eating puts an expense on your gold. Staying at an inn is only 10 septims, I think it should be 50 maybe. I grab certain loot for certain characters so I don't have weight restrictions but usually grab very little and usually end up with a little more than 100 pounds.

I know it has nothing to do with money but it is something that adds weight to the game. When I read books I usually wait 1 or 2 halours depending on how long it was to read. A novice spell takes 1 hour, apprentice. 2 hours, etc.

Stuff like this helps with immersion and realism which in turn, helps me roleplay.

I have never had a huge amount of gold and wondered why most people say they are rich. They tend to grab everything and I've never done that.

I could have tons of money since I favored alchemy and now I'm 100 and I brew expensive potions. But I've come to the conclusion I should only brew them for myself, otherwise if I sell them everywhere I get too rich too fast.

What city is Proudspire Manor located?
And what makes it good for a mage?

I can get a fair bit of gold by;

Making and selling potions.

Buying iron ore from blacksmiths, using the 'Transmute' alteration spell to turn them into gold ore.

I then make gold necklaces (doesn't need smithing perks, so it fits around my Mage/ artifactor RP).

I then enchant them and sell them for a profit :D

I'm usually wasting my gold on new spells though ??

Sometimes it's better to just sell on the gold ores/ingots, to avoid levelling smithing to high.
- I limit myself to 3 or 4 peices of jewellery a time :)

My first character was a right hoarder. Basically, anything I found I would keep and stash somewhere. Came in handy when I wanted to buy Proudspire Manor. Mind you, it didn't half waste time loading myself up and wandering around finding people to sell to, then going back and repeating the process. Sold a tiny percentage of what I have to raise the 25,000...and how he's hoarding again.

My current character isn't going to do that at all. She's going to be almost 100% Mage, only carrying two changes of clothes, a dagger, a few potions and a few ingredients. I don't really like the thing of being able to carry thousands of items at a time.

Not sure it makes sense from a RP perspective to have tonnes of equipment in your bag. I mean if I find equipment which is better than what I have I dump the old stuff and equip the new 90% of the time).

I tend not to lvl the crafting skills much, my play restrictions often prevent me from obtaining lots of ore, gems and ingredients but I can see how alchemy would make you rich very quickly.

Like I said I know how to make money. Was just interested to hear if anyone has other restrictions (RP) which makes it hard to come by.

Just rempered one more, I used to fine myself if I died, I'd drop 250g for every death, which can stack up when playing at master lvl, especially as a Mage.

PS - RP a drunk, 60g for a bottle of black briar mead stacks up when your a degenerate drunk. ;)

I don't have to RP, I'm just rubbish at getting money xD

I'm sure that will change once I do my usual trick of mastering alchemy.

Like many people, I make my money through crafting.

My favorite way is enchanting, because it's relatively quick and painless. I mostly make enchanted weapons, mostly iron daggers because they are easiest to make and lightest to carry around. The price of enchanted item is mostly determined by enchant type. Banish is the best, but hard to find sometimes. Paralysis, Absorb Health, Damage Stamina, Turn Undead are not as good but still good enough.

I also make some money from smithing, when I make lots of Steel Plate Armors and upgrade them. But it's mostly for leveling up smithing.

I used to make money from alchemy a lot, but I don't anymore because it's a bit too detail oriented and makes me OCD.

If you wanna go Alchemy to earn some shiny gold, then for me, at least at early levels, is to collect blue butterfly wings (whiterun hold).. And blue mountain flowers.
Both common.
Combined they increase your alchemy quickly, and leave you a nice profit ;)

I've never been able to accumulate a lot of money. I spend too much money on homes and stuff for followers. 8 characters and over 700 hrs, but I still haven't gotten the 100K trophy I've read about. Played my main character for the first time in a month recently and forgot I was having him save money for that achievement. Bought the house in Riften and all the extras. Now he has to go around peddling potions, weapons, and armor to make up for it.

I'm always broke, I tend to blow all my money on potions, training, and buying property. Potions alone are reason enough to lose all your money. LOL, 900 gold for a regenerate health potion.

All of my characters so far loot the dead, but after the first couple of levels, I usually only take arrows, gold, and lockpicks. This is, of course only if the character would use arrows or lockpicks. They all use gold. :)
For the first few levels, I usually haul back everything I can carry and sell it. I tend to spend money on a house with upgrades, ingredients, a little training here and there, and spells. Again, this is only if the character uses these things. Honestly, as in real life, I don't know where my money goes. :(

I think one of the reasons I'm always broke is because I only loot valuable things that are light weight. But I would rather do that than scrounge every single corpse that I find or every little container.
