Serious computer problem

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 4:34 pm

A few months ago I replaced my PC and monitor because the monitor would just turn itself off one minute after I turn the PC on.
When reseting the monitor the picture would come back for a split second and go again. After that I just decided to buy a new PC and monitor since I had no idea what caused the problem. I was scared if I'd only replace one the new item would break too.

Everything on my PC is replaced, even the cables. Today though, the monitor just turned itself off again and it worked when I turned it off and on again. This is exactly how it started back then. I have paid so much for this piece of [censored] and I have no idea what's causing this.
Can anyone please help..?
I really can't figure out what's causing this..

Is this on a power strip? Have you tried a new power strip?

My 2 cents

1. Make sure the Power Options are set to Never turn monitor off.
2. Check settings on monitor.
3. Run Virus Scan and Spyware

Yes it is on a power strip and no I didn't.

I don't have a new one right now but what I did is I left the rest of the stuff on the power strip and plugged the monitor into a seperate power plug.

I've done that with the last one too and it didn't help. I even turned off all power saving settings on the monitor.

It could be a faulty video card

Try using the monitor on a different computer and see if the problem persists

But this is the 2nd time it happens and the PC is completely new..?
Also if it's the video card the picture should come back automatically after some time, no? But I need to turn the monitor off and on again..

1. Try a new power strip

2. Unplug everything but the PC and monitor from the power strip -- You may be overloading it.

I have no idea.. it might really be the power strip even though it doesn't seem to affect other devices.

I already plugged the monitor into a seperate power plug so if it's really the power it shouldn't happen again.

Think about it: what the two rigs have in common? Your house. So your house is haunted. I suggest you run like hell.

Joking aside, it might be a faulty power plug. Monitors are really sensitive to power spikes and they will need a clean and stable power line to power themselves on.

Yeah that's possible but.. how do I know whether it's faulty or not? Everything else works fine.
I'm going to buy a new power strip tomorrow and try to use another plug..

You would need a multimeter for that. Did you replace the cables as well?

Yeah the cable that connects the monitor to the power plug is the one that came with the monitor. I threw the old one away with the old monitor.

Ive had this happen to me before, check the video card to make sure its not faulty and its FULLY IN PLACE for its cradle in the tower ( my old pc did this alot, all i had to do was nudge the card back in place)

Like the other said, the only thing both computers had in common was your house. Chances are there's a faulty power plug or that your distribution box sends power spikes through your wiring. Get an electrician in there and let him see what the problem is.
