That's a Steam error code.

You can try this:
According to the folks at Steam. If you have an Error 51 it means that your ClientRegistry.blob file in the Steam folder is corrupt. Try deleting that file and Steam should redownload the correct version of that file. This should fix your problem.

Additionally, if you get error 51 and replacing your ClientRegistry.blob file doesn't appear to fix the problem, check your firewall software. If the firewall software blocks some of steam's communication this can also lead to an error 51.

Or try running Steam as an administrator (though that shouldn't be the problem).

Otherwise you might have to try the Steam support forums.

Just as a note, you can't use a 4GB patch or any other software that alters the FalloutNV.exe or it won't work as well.

No joy, deleted ClientRegistry.blob, rebooted, Steam updated and still error 51 (I am admin on this computer) what I want to know is why Bethesda released this when it was quite clearly full of glitches and why the hell they made it a Steam client - Fallout 3 worked bloody fine without Steam

Well, Fallout 3 works just fine with Steam as well. That's where I bought it.

It downloaded, so I assume the firewall isn't an issue.

Right click New Vegas in your Steam Library and try the "verify game integrity" option?

Your not going to want to hear this, nor will you do it ( Personal Opinion ).

Reformat and reinstall OS. Update the OS, Video and Sound card, Direct X. Do not put any personal programs on your system.

Install Fallout New Vegas (along with steam).

Your only other choice would be trying to find out what the conflicting program or registry error is. In which case, you will more than likely not find it ( I could be wrong.... ) and you will continue to be mad.

In addition, once you get Fallout New Vegas running without CTD's or Freezes ( Yes, I have NO CTD or Freezes ) then you will get mad anyways because of some of the in game bugs, which makes the game unplayable ( In my Opinion again ). Of course, there are some fan made work arounds at Fallout New Vegas Nexus and you can also try using the console commands, but is that what you really paid for?

And yes, the upcoming forth patch is supposed to be the so called, " GLORY FIX ", that has yet to remain seen.

After doing all the above, if you still get the same error, you will have a better idea of what it is not.

Acolyte,
You are surely taking the piss? Reformat my OS? TO PLAY A [censored] GAME! More chance of screwing a Hollywood leading lady. I bought the game on disc not through Steam,is it possible to load the game direct and bypass Steam altogether?

Showler,
When I right click on FONV in Steam Library I get a load of options but "verify game integrity" is not one of them

The game has to be authenticated through Steam, and it will always run through Steam. You don't need to be online to play, but you do need to be online to authenticate/activate the game.

If the "verify game integrity" option doesn't fix it, I'd have to suggest going to the Steam forums themselves. The error sounds like a Steam issue, not a New Vegas issue directly, so you're more likely to find a quick solution there.

edit: Oops, catching up. Right click the game, choose Properties (bottom entry), new window pops up, select the Local Files tab and the "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" option should be the third button down.

Dang, that's probably just the InstallScript.vdf. Everybody seems to have that one fail.

All I can suggest now is to confirm the version number of FalloutNV.exe is 1.2.0.285 (Properties in Windows Explorer, or just hover over it till the info box becomes visible), and if so check the official Steam forums for hints on how to correct the problem.

The error 51 can also happen if the program can not write to the program directory- though this would be an unusual issue since you are using windows XP. I would still check to make sure that your steam and fallout new vegas directories are not somehow being set to read only. Still, I think that is a longshot.

A permissions related issue would be more likely if you were using Vista or Windows 7 and had disabled UAC after having installed the game. In XP the only thing I can think of that could cause a similar problem would be disabling the "run as" service.

So were you able to get it working or just able to confirm you've got the most current patch?

XP can still use directory locks when in LUA mode, or when there are VSS corruption issues.

Tried to launch game which looked good at first as it started downloading MS files(directx etc) then same bloody thing "error 51" Come on guys some one must be able to help!

It's a Steam error, not a New Vegas error (I'm pretty sure, anyway). Ask in the Steam support forum ( http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=17 ) or send a help request to Valve ( https://support.steampowered.com/newticket.php ).

As far as I'm aware Ihave followed all the advice given. It may be that your problem and mine are not the same but telling me what lead to your problem and how you resolved it could be useful

Strangely enough they were both set to read only but changing that hasn't sorted the problem. Can you explain more about the "Run As" service?

Strangely enough both folders were set to read only but changing that has'nt solved the problem. Can you explain the "run as" feature a little more?

The error 51 can also happen if the program can not write to the program directory- though this would be an unusual issue since you are using windows XP. I would still check to make sure that your steam and fallout new vegas directories are not somehow being set to read only. Still, I think that is a longshot.

A permissions related issue would be more likely if you were using Vista or Windows 7 and had disabled UAC after having installed the game. In XP the only thing I can think of that could cause a similar problem would be disabling the "run as" service.

So were you able to get it working or just able to confirm you've got the most current patch?
