[REQ] 'Shell Rain' Like Mod Ported to New Vegas

Post » Wed Feb 09, 2011 12:12 pm

Heyo folks, new here, thought I'd put this forward :)

I'd love to see Shell Rain (or similar effect) ported to FONV http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5277 I just can't get used to my shells vanishing again, and with all the groovy new single shot rifles, it'd be ace to see those bullet shells piling up next to me after some prolonged fire fights.
I think all that needs to be changed from Shell Rain is it's data file dependency, but I'm not savy enough with the GECK to make it happen. If anyone could make it happen you'd make my day :)

Cheers!

Edit: I did a quick and dirty fix on the existing shellrain.esp, simply changed its master to FalloutNV.esm
Appears to be working, so there's a temporary solution :D
I would upload but I'm highjacking someone elses work with the current way and it's not exactly tested

All ShellsRain does is change a global value, so I don't think there's anything transcendental or copyrightable there.

Nevermind that because of EULA, gamesas owns the rights to all game mods. :)

Contact the original mod author on nexus, but given its just a value, I think you can release it with a "Based on/Inspired by" clause, it would just be good manners to ask him if you can use the same name :)

The nice thing about the New Vegas GECK is that it is very similar to the Fallout 3 one. Almost all game settings from Fallout 3 are in the New Vegas as well, with the same name.

I don't know if there are any hidden bad consequences for simply changing the master to the FalloutNV.esm, but either way it should be pretty easy to recreate a mod by looking at which values it changed. I've already done it for http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5606, which I found to be the best auto aim fix for FO3.

This is in my NV Realism Tweaks (I'm going to try to release my first beta late today, but I still have a LOT to do first).

But I can give you the Game Setting that you have to change . . . just a sec. I'm not totally awake yet . . . [rummaging through her piles of notes and sticky notes] . . . ok, I found it:

"Spent Shells (from bullets) - Now last 4 hours before they begin to disappear (instead of only a few seconds)."
?
fGunShellLifetime (default is 5, and I changed it to? 240 seconds)

*randomly reappears*
Thanks for the info folks :)

Seems there's been some development while I've been gone, so I'll fish around with what's out.
@Arwen saw the release, will have a crack on the second play through. I'm always a bit of a purist on the first play through, I just can't hack the toned down vanilla cosmetics Fallout after the bloody shrapnel ridden mess I turned FO3 into :P

Strange- changing this parameter has no effect on how long casings stay for me. Even downloading the 'Shell Rain' mod and changed the master to FalloutNV.esm and the casings off of my weathered 10mm disappear in under 5 seconds. Any idea why?

That's strange since Arwen's edit works flawlessly in her mod. Did you try doing it from scratch instead?

I changed the setting to 240 seconds too, but the empty shells still disappear almost as soon as they hit the ground.

I actually gave my shellrain hackjob a whirl yesterday while getting back into NV and it now no longer works. Guessing one of the updates has changed something. Either way I'm not phased, it wasn't exactly a great solution.

Arwen, is there any chance of you putting out a stand alone version of your shell stay mod effect? Everyone else seems to have only partial luck getting it to work
The big issue people seem unable to solve is making them stay when spawned in first person. Would be appreciated ^_^
I'm not really savey with the GECK for this stuff, only environment building and alike

I made a mod for FNV that do the same thing that shell rain. You can download it http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34956
Unfortunately, something changed between F3 and FNV, the lifetime game setting doesn't work in first person view, but work well in 3rd person. I don't know why, but i believe it's a bug, the lifetime of shell in 1st person view seem to be "hard-coded" in the game. :brokencomputer:

Yours is the one I'm presently using Kospy ^_^
Have you tried contacting Arwen about how she pulled it off? I haven't seen it in action so I can't say if it works in first person or not, but }{ellKnight says it works flawlessly in her realism pack
