Shield And Magic Spear...

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 10:31 am

Seeing as spears do not exist, I decided to make a magic character who uses a shield and a spell, which is Ice Spear.

Now, this is not spear-enough, so I am using a Staff of Ice Spear and a shield. Is this a viable playstyle, if I use magic as well?

I guess that would make me a magic ranged hoplite.

typically destro only works as a primary damage output due to Impact stagger....

but you can really due w/e.... I wouldn't even think of trying that on Expert though.... Adept will probably prove challenging enough at high level.

I'd probably recommend heavy armor, especially as Stamina is of limited use to you, enchanting for free destro casting (it's gonna take tons of casts to kill in big fights) and you might consider Conjuration to summon an extra distraction and form of damage output for harder fights.

Sorta, not a mage myself. But that seems like a good idea.

Problem is Destro damage scaling (or rather lack there of)
Pure mages using destro spam dual-cast which do around 2.12x damage (so a little more than 2 single casts) which also stagger enemies with Impact.

The lower damage is offset by the mages other spells, conjuration/illusion primarily, along with being able to hold enemies off themselves while doing respectable damage.

Shield + 1 hand spell means severely limiting that.... and of course skyrims lovely quick map won't work with changing spells in right hand while keeping shield equipped.... it's a real shame really.... so any alternate spells will need to be equipped manually via favorites menu.

Heavy armor and shield should help survive the inevitable hits he will end up taking because he's not stagger locking enemies.

I might actually also recommend taking some 1hand.... You can use your "spear" as much as possible, but you might want to fall back on a sword when fighting enemies that are constantly in melee and you need to kill them as fast as possible.... just a consideration
