Should bethesda give console users ability to download mods?

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 10:29 am

I see alot of cool-looking mods on youtube noticeably the mod for the sword Chrysamere which is by far the sixiest looking sword Ive ever seen. So should bethesda have a mod system for console users also? Not be able to make them mind you because thats bloody impossible apparently on console but if we could download mods from xbox live or download on pc and transfer files to consoles should console gamers not have the thrill of sharing mods the same way pc gamers do?

It's not that simple, but if they could find a way to make it possible, why not?

Bethesda would do it in a heartbeat if they could. But it's not up to Bethesda. It's up to M$ and Sony.

Maybe after the next Xbox comes out, M$ will cooperate to find a way to have a massive editor on Xbox built specifically for TES VI and beyond. It could work but M$ doesn't like mods on their console. You'd probably have to buy the creation kit as a separate Xbox game or something.

The only reason I see this as a possibility, however slim the chances are, is because M$ is really going all out in the console war.

The problem is making sure the mods are safe and not going to crash/corrupt someone game. That would cost money because that would require the mods to be vetted for potential issues and even patched correctly for them to work together safely. Unlike on a PC modifying files on a console would be problematic.....

Even if consoles were to get mods in the future I could only see it being a select few that would be released on xbox live as free updates, something like the 10 most popular each month. I doubt consoles will ever get the freedom PC users have.

Can you imagine how many people would ring up and complain to Sony and MS that their mods are not working..... you'd be on hold for hours and that is a bigger headache than they need

Ever seen the mods Unreal Tournament III allowed on consoles? The results were so limited, you can see why not many games have an option to download mods on the console versions.

Not this again.
It's got NOTHING to do with Bethesda - if you want to use mods on a console you would need to talk to the manufacturers of the console. Sony and Microsoft control content on their consoles, not the software companies; Bethesda being one of them.
Additionally, mods are by nature unofficial and as such are outside the remit of the official software provider anyway.

The problem is that MODs may cause unforeseen glitches or ruin a savegame, hence why Microsoft and Sony don't allow them. The typical heavy MOD user is an experienced PC gamer.

My few MODs are always distributed as a collection of loose files to ensure that only people with a decent knowledge of the engine install those, even if I may end up upsetting a few individuals who expect the MOD installing procedure to be painless as expanding a zipped file.

Call it a sort of fool-proof protection.

As a modder I wouldn't want to deal with a certification process for submitting my work to a console nor to test my mods against several other modifications to ensure compatiblitiy. MOD users should know it's always a risky endeavor to use MODs

it would be vary limited... as is consoles are stuck with the same hardware for years where as PCs get upgrades almost monthly ( might be an exaggeration) mods would have to be form fitted for the console them selves or be made compatible and porting doesn't always end well if its done hastily anyway just look at what the ps3 oblivion turned out to be after that hasty port. if they can figure out a way for it to not be so limited or even a mod making software specifically meant for the consoles then maybe it would be better though still vary limited. as it is i cannot see this happening.

Well it's not a feature I used, I prefer to play the game as the developers intended. I know a lot of mods can affect the stability of games (particularly when a new patch is released) so I wouldn't bother with them, even if they are really fun. I enjoy just reading about others experiences with them.

if it'll keep the console users from saying "i want x and y for consoles but PC shouldn't get it because they can mod it in", i'd hug every bethesda member. lots of console players ask for a feature like a new marriage partner, a certain balance fix etc then say that PC users shouldn't get it because they can make mods for it. that really ticks me off, because it is rather unfair, since bethesda should not make anything exclusive (*glares at Micro$oft) unless it is justified (such as the kinect and HD texture pack). i think that console users deserve to get mods too, but M$ and $ony are (understandbly) against it, due to the issues it can cause.

bethesda making modpack DLCs, which you download, and you could choose which ones to activate and which ones to turn off, would be great. the Frostfall mod would be fun to have on console.

I understand what you're trying to say here, but...Nobody is playing the game they way the devs intended. Lots of material wound up getting cut prior to release, and other material never saw the light of day because they couldn't get it to work right. If we were paying as they wanted, then the game file would've been far larger than it already is.
Mods on cosoles? sure why not, I've got no problem with it, why should pc users be the only ones to enjoy them...but until Micro$haft ans $sony decides to allow it, there's not much more that can be done.

I dislike modding/tinkering. If I felt the need to mod a game then I would rather play a different game.

Hey, that's an incredibly original idea for a discussion.

I wonder why there has never been a single thread on this topic before?

Microsoft and Sony would have to agree, and because of the possibility of mods breaking the console, they won't. Simple as.

The fact that mods can cause some damage is also a possible reason for Unreal Tournament III on the consoles having such a limited mod selection. Most mods are also graphical changes, which require backing up of the original files in some cases. Consoles can't back up a texture file as far as I know.

Well, if I remember correctly, the tool that was used to 'cook' (ie:Convert) the mods for UT3 could only handle maps up to a certain size and complexity and would either crash on anything above those limits or it would result in a map filled with more errors than a novel written by a dyslexic chimp that drank too much coffee and was using a typewriter with two thirds of the keys missing.

In fact, the console games that do allow modding usually use a tool that's integrated into the game itself (Not actually a separate tool like the CK) and the mods are restricted to stand alone maps rather than new content added to the main game world.

They have stated they want to, but the console guys (Sony and MS) won't let them do it for whatever odd reasons. Something to do with potentially damaging the player's game.
