Should I buy Knights of the Old Republic?

Post » Tue Nov 29, 2011 12:24 pm

So, I got a hankerin' to play something Star Wars related (since the last SW game I played was Battlefront II when it came out), and I realized I've only heard good things about KOTOR. The reason I'm even asking is because it's an older game, and I'd like to know if there's an otherwise more enjoyable SW game (that's free or reasonably priced) out there somewhere.

It's $9.99 on Steam.

Y/N?

For $10 you can't go wrong.

It is a great game, selling it for 10 dollars should be a crime.

I’m mad that Battle Front 3 got shut down!

It was completed to but then the company went bankrupt I’m not sure. Curse you Lucas arts!

Yes, though you should also look into the Jedi Knight series if you haven't already.

Absolutely.

My favorite thing about it is the character relationships and interactions.

Might as well, but play as sith. The game is FAR superior as sith.

Playing as sith allows you to do one of the most hilariously devious things I have ever seen in any game ever. It's great. Playing as jedi allows you to have a game that's much worse than if you were to play as sith, so I reiterate: play as sith.

If you ever played Mass Effect you'll find the gameplay and story flow very similar. Inferior graphics, obviously, but otherwise on par.

Yeah, Sith is easier... Force Lightning, etc.

Put points into Lockpick, or whatever that skill is. I haven't played KotOR in so long... I really should. Also, get to Tatooine, for the best party member ever.

I've played this game about 10 times doing it both ways. Light is just as good as Dark side. Force lightening makes Dark side easier though.

Do yourself a favor and get Jade Empire after you've beaten this game if you haven't played it yet.

Except it's really not, because:

Spoiler
You can't make Zaalbar kill Mission, which was the best part of KOTOR.

Unless you want to do a weird hybrid of some sort.

You have to understand, older games are in many ways better than newer games. It shouldn't reason enough for you to hesitate. GET IT NOW!

Meh, I haven't been into the evil-for-evil sake side of things for a while. Even when I do get around to an evil playthrough I still end up being a good guy.

Play it now.

One of the best games ever made, really just a classic.

Hell, I'm gonna play it again soon too. :)

Another vote for "yes." Also a tip of the hat to wingus for mentioning the Jedi Knight series. Jedi Outcast is hands-down the most fun I've had with The Force. :P (Force jump, look down at storm troopers, force pull, watch them fly into the air as you're landing...hilarity ensues...)

This is true. I really need to buy this on pc again. I don't think it works on my 360.

Yes, and don't look up to many forums about it before finishing it, because you really don't want the plot spoiled for you.

Add one more voice to the chorus, KotoR is one of the best RPGs I've played, on top of being one of the best uses of the Star Wars license.

Agreed. If you don't know anything about the story, walk away. Right now. Run. Far away. Until you beat the game. Then come back. We'll (probably) still be here.

As a person, I prefer Light Side- just because I don't see the point in killing people just for the sake of killing people.

However, in line with the above mentioned example, Dark Side has it's own charm. For example:
Spoiler
The Matale-Sandral Feud, which you can rig to leave all involved parties dead in a shootout of their own making.
