Should I buy this used Xbox 360?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 3:03 am

My disck drive and adapter in my Xbox 360 died so I've been looking for local used ones, I finally found one, the guy's asking $60 for it (fair because it is the first model) it's the same model I had, however he says it's prone to freezing, that was almost a deal breaker, but it's really my only choice as I don't feel like dishing out $300 for Microsoft's latest model. Do you guys think I should buy this Xbox?

Note: The website I found this on requires you meet the person face-to-face to buy the product, so there's no worry of being scammed, and of course I'll know where he lives if I do get scammed. :hehe:

I don't recommend it. Sounds like it's on its last legs, probably would RRoD in a month.

I wouldn't recommend it. From firsthand experience, when a game console is prone to freezing (especially the 360), that's an almost sure sign that it's going to die soon.

EDIT: :ninja: ed

I'd just pop over to GameStop and buy a used one for $100. They're guaranteed to work.

Personally, I'd buy it for $60 if I need a new one. I've had my 360 since launch and when it red ringed I sent it in and it lasted about a year, then it red ringed again. So, I looked online and found a repair guide and repaired it myself and it hasn't red ringed or froze since and that was over a year ago.

Have Micro fix your drive. I have plenty of times. Heck, they know I'm calling every ten months or so. They dont even give you a run around, just dont take no for an answer and tell them that your getting red rings, and they'll fix whatever problem you have for free.

Too much stuff on the table at the moment, I need to buy new blinds, a new TV, and I recently had to buy a new laptop for work. :(

I don't have a GameStop in my city, just an EB Games, and my experience with them is being over charged for used products.

If your console is under warranty. They charge $100 for a red-ringed console that isn't under warranty.

The warranty is long expired  Unless what you're saying is all I need to do is call them, act stubborn, and lie, because I can do that. :D

They wont charge you anything if you dont take no for an answer. Ive had a 360 since its been out and never had a warranty, nor is my 360 under warranty from the 'red ring warranty', and I get mine fixed regularly for free. Ive had friends 360s fixed that werent under any warranty. Its just like old school Sony, where youd have to threaten them by saying your getting a X Box, but you have to go a little harder than that.

Unless what you're saying is all I need to do is call them, act stubborn, and lie, because I can do that. :D

Yes, but I wouldnt call it lying. Your just leveling speechcraft.

Its not an in-store thing, you order online and they deliver it to your front door. :hehe:

As long as you live in the U.S. that is.

As for the Xbox, I wouldn't recommend it. If your dying to game at this very moment and second, then by all means buy an old, problematic Xbox. If you can wait a little while, wait until your next paycheck and buy a higher quality one.

Or a PS3. Ya' know, cause all the cool kids are buying them. :P

Nope, I live in Canadia, how aboot that Eh? *Ahem* Anyway buying a PS3 would cost too much, besides I'm primarily a PC gamer, the reason I own an Xbox is for it's Exclusives.

EB Games should change the exact same price for a refurbished console. And yeah, we do charge too much for our used games. The return policy is pretty nice on used games though.

I still think I can get a better deal somewhere else than $139.99.

I would not, you never know what kind of treatment it could have received, also, my first was bought at a pawn shop and got RRoD after two years, although buying used does not really make it more likely for that to happen.

keep in mind that the only benefit you will receive buying used is that it cost less, and some things concerning you gaming console is worth paying a little extra for so you don't end up paying twice as much down the line.

The first generation of 360s turned out to be a rather poor purchase, prone to RROD. I would not recommend buying a used 360 at all, but a new slim model instead which is much more energy efficient and stable.

I would recommend against it because if it freezes it likely won't last to long after you buy it. It's good that he told you that though because alot of people wouldn't..............

You can get a new slim model and then buy a third party HDD. I recently bought a third party HDD and it works great. It is a 250GB HDD and it cost me $52.90 after shipping. Take that, overpriced MS Brand HDD!

The ONLY thing different about third party HDD's is that they aren't allowed to have backwards compatibility. That shouldn't be a problem unless you plan on playing original xbox games.

$300 is quite a lot for a console that'll be obsolete in a year...

I don't have any problems with my HDD though...

Never buy a pre-owned Xbox its a foolish move IMO.
My friend got one pre-owned, first day Red Ringed, and couldn't sent it back for repairs because the shop refused it and Microsoft refused it also because the ID sticker had been ripped off and the previous owner had opened it up.
Its more hassle buying a second hand one compared to a brand new one as there more prone to failure

I'm going to second the EB/Gamestop thing. I wouldn't save money for the new 360. For the price you are paying you aren't getting nearly as much gear in it as you did the older ones. When I bought my 360 in the winter of 2008 (its an older one) I got the HDMI cables and the VGA cables, the head set, a controller and a bunch of other gear. When I bought my son his 360 last winter he got a controller and VGA cables. Same thing when I bought my brother a new 360.

That, coupled with the 4 gig HDD makes it not even worth it. If you play COD and you DL the map packs for it you'd need a new HDD cause the old one is full. Hell, I was setting the network up on my son's 360 this past weekend and I took a gander at his HDD and he only has 2 gig left on it. I'm going to have to buy him a new HDD soon.

On my old school 360 with the 60 gig HDD I've still got 48 gigs. And, I can still get the 60, 120 and 250 gig drives fairly cheap from Gamestop/EB.

I'd definitely buy a used one from Gamestop/EB over buying a new 360.
