Should Explosives be a standalone weapon skill?

1. To be standalone they need Flamers and possibly other short-range weapons like maybe Shishkebab.
2. To be support they shouldn't require as many perks as they do now.

Why?

I think it's absurd that a Fat Man doesn't even really hobble a deathclaw, while I can take them down in 1-2 hits with my best Unarmed weapon, and I think it's silly that you need to spend at least three perks to get it close to feeling "right." But I think you'd be nuts to rely on Explosives as your primary combat skill, even if they were implemented more realistically . Explosives should be big-damage, big-risk, with a high area of effect and the constant chance of blowing up in your face when used on enemies who close in on you quickly. Loading slugs into a Grenade Rifle doesn't make it a versatile Explosives weapon; it makes it a Guns weapon.

Why not?

All combat skills have their pro's and their con's.
Just like Explosives.

On that note.
Demolition Expert should be two ranks with +30%DMG instead of three ranks with +20%DMG.

Agree, and pretty much everything else you've said about explosives.

I think it's kind of farfetched to have explosives as a primary weapon skill. I really don't see why realism should be bent enough to provide "safe" explosives. If you bounce a grenade off a wall and it explodes at your feet, you should die horribly, just as you would IRL.

You talk about realism being bent? I mean really..... in Fallout?

To fix explosives you need to rearrange their perks, allow crafting and increased purchasing points, and maybe make it so they penetrate a little DT?
At the very least make it so a HE rocket from Unique missile launcher at full 100skill does less than me punching someone with a Powerfist.

Yes you should die, that's not the point- the point is that the enemy should die too, and right now they don't. I used frags as my main weapon for a FO3 character, yes it was dangerous, but extremely fun. The DT mechanic doesn't mix well with explosive AOE damage of explosives in FONV.
