Should I Get Chrono Trigger?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 7:49 pm

I'm going to get a PS1 classic from the PSN. I'm going to get either Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Suikoden, Xenogears, or Legend of Dragoon.

Which should I get? Is Trigger better than Cross?

Yes!

Also, when people talk about the great CT game, are they referring to the SNES version?

I'm assuming the PSN version is the PS1 port.

It is indeed. While it's about the worst version out there, it's still worth playing (though I'd definitely get it on Virtual Console or DS if possible).

Trigger is better, but Cross was a fine sequel IMO (it's one of my favorite games in its own right). I'd say that Cross had a better soundtrack though.

Cross was PSX, so should I just get that since you said the PSX port of Trigger is the worst?

Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Suikoden and Xenogears are all great games. Chrono Trigger is arguably the best of them, but Chrono Cross got the best game soundtrack ever made, Xenogears is one of the deeper games ever made and Suikoden is just awesome too with a great storyline.

I highly recommend them all

Just a shame that Suikoden II isn't available on PSN, as it's my favorite JRPG of all time, and better than the above 4 games

The bad thing about the PS1 version of Chrono Trigger, is that it suffer a bit from loading times. Which is really strange, as the game isn't big at all, so in that regard it's a poor port.

Avoid the PS1 version, it has terrible loading times.

Other than that, its an absolutely amazing game. I mean, it's basically Dragon Ball + Final Fantasy, what more could you want?

Is there any other problems with the PlayStation port of Trigger besides the loading? I read that it has added anime style FMV's among other extras as well.

I didn't like Chrono Cross or Xenogears, so I don't recommend them. Can't comment on Legend of Dragoon, never played it.

Chrono Trigger's a good game, but I consider it to be overrated. And if it's the PS1 port, you should definitely avoid it, unless it's the only version you can actually get. So out of general principle and a vain hope that Suikoden II will appear on PSN someday, I have to say Suikoden. :disguise:

Yeah, it has some anime sequences. They're not excessive, and there's nothing wrong with them on principle, but...well, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wax_6uNM6P4. Notice the choppiness? That's not due to YouTube, that's how it was in-game! :brokencomputer:

Takes at least four seconds to load every time a battle begins. And whenever you enter and exit the menu.

It is highly regarded as the best RPG of all time, so go get it.

No I don't agree with that, but I haven't played it, and a swarm of people will just say how wrong I am for feeling such, even if I did.

You are all wrong.

Final Fantasy VII is the greatest JRPG of all time.

I enjoyed Legend of Dragoon. But that was back then, on the PS1.

One of the more unique JRPGs I've played. If I remember right, you can fight the final boss any time you want, and you get a different ending depending on where you are in the storyline when you beat him.

HA!

I was just about to ask if I would be the only one endorsing LoD. Of the list in the OP, Dragoon is my favorite. I'm a little biased though, it was one of the first video games I ever sat down and played.
I also have never played Xeno(anything) or Trigger.

I played Cross, though, and it was marvelous.

I did Suikoden III, IV, and V (is there a VI?)
They were great. I never played the older versions though.

Cross > Trigger in my opinion. But I'm the oddball there, most will tell you trigger is better.

The Time Crash is still one of my favorite parts in a video game. When you finally start to realize what happened and how it's connected to Trigger.(You should probably play this first though to get the full effect)

Cross and Trigger's connection is indeed very cool. It can be a bit hard to follow, especially if Trigger isn't fresh in your memory, but I love it. The world of the Chrono games is a big reason I want Chrono Break to happen. Doesn't even have to be a direct sequel to either game.

I also liked the massive cast of recruitable characters in Cross, even if they weren't important to the story.

Back in the day I played Dragoon for about 5 minutes.... Never again.

For Chrono Trigger, ds is best for the secret ending /boss fight.

I played, and still rarely play Legend of Dragoon. Love that game.

I'd suggest Chrono Cross, never played Trigger but I did get to play Cross a little, and it was amazing.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I haven't decided yet and I won't buy one until this weekend. Right now i'm favoring Cross, or Suikoden. I've heard good things about Xenogears as well.

I'd get CT for the DS,DSi Or 3DS, it's a better version trust me. http://www.millionaireplayboy.com/mpb/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/seven_palpatine_00.jpg ? Seriously the DS version of Chrono Trigger is awesome, it has some new dungens and ties into Chrono Cross a little better then the PS version, that is if you have a DS system if not then the PS version is also a great version of the CT as well B).
