So. Should I just give up on modding? Skyrim Crashes when lo

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 12:35 pm

So after having 2 days worth of problems because my Mod's code just stopped executing, I figured I would work on more of the level designed aspects of my MOD.

The problem now...

After working on an interior cell for a while, I tried to visit in game via COC. Skyrim crashed. I think the game just hates me.

Anybody know what can cause this?

ummm... yea.

Furthermore, I've COCed to this cell about 40 time before. But I just updated it today. Saved the Mod, and suddenly I can't coc in.

Also, if you guys wanna know what I changed, all I did was remove 6 Lights, 6 Statics, add 4 lights, and add 3 statics.

You have a backup folder in your skyrim game folder. Try to find the esp version without crash if you can.

How do I load the backup? It's a BAK file

Are these changes being done to your own completely from-scratch custom cell, or are you editing a vanilla? If it's vanilla, you're crashing because you deleted those objects. Deleting vanilla objects is a very big no-no. Either set them to 'intially disabled' or move them out of the way.

If it's a custom cell, then I'm note sure what's up. :/

Well.. All of the backups-Based on Date-were created today... so there's not a real possibility of me fixing all of my code execution problems with this. I don't think. I'll try it for the cell though.

Are you using a clean save game. Removing things them reloading a save game in that cell will often cause this.

I didn't save IN the cell and then remove objects from them same cell, if that's what you're asking.

Eventually use the "Data->details" and Del to ignore the latest modification if you can find them.

I prefer to link to the Tamriel worldspace rather than coc to a WIP cell. Just place a load door in the Tamriel cell (or existing interior cell) where you plan to put the entrance to your mod cell, and create your teleport link.

And no, you should not give up modding. You should confront your problems head-on and work through them.

Wait. You don't need to go that far.

If all you changed was a few things and you think that's where the problems lie then do this. Go download http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=5064 then create a brand new esp. Then you open up the brand new esp in tesvsnip along with your old one and copy over the good records from the old esp into the new one (you can do that by cell, worldspace, NPC, misc item, etc). You don't need to redo everything.

Also, ya, don't give up. I cannot tell you how many times I have had a mod CTD at the starting screen or whatever on me. The thing I do is backup, backup, backup. Sometimes more than once in a day (that's when I'm trying something completely new and I have no idea what might happen because of it), but always at the beginning of every work session so I can go back to that if something unbelievably weird like you just had happen happens because weird inexplicable stuff like that just happens. Not often, but when it does it's tragic with no backup to go back to (which I've had happen too when I forgot to backup...urgh).

Well you shouldn't have to completely restart...save a backup, then copy out any modified cells to another mod, then clear the modified cells one at a time by deleting them in the loading dialog, until you find the one that's causing the trouble, then look at that one closely.

How do I force Backup in CK?

EDIT: Also, for those of you who can't tell, which it is probably obvious, I havn't really modded before. (Other than Maps for UT). I've wanted to for a long time, but never had a good PC game that allowed it. I know how to navigate a cpu and things, but Not used to some tools. So, thanks for pointing me to TESVSnip

Nah man, don't give up on modding. It does get frustrating when you keep hitting a brick wall, but that just means it's time to take a break and come back and try again later. There will be bumps in the road, but the end result is always worth fighting through it.

I don't know how to force a backup. I do it myself. And, ya, that's how I started modding too. I picked up the Geck with FO3 when I had an idea I was very motivated to get into the game. I feel your pain. It's tough in the beginning and takes a lot of perseverance to keep going :)

So do you go into the Snip tool, and back-up your work to a different .esp?

No I copy the esp into a folder on my desktop and rename it with the date and if I do it more than once in a day I add the date. By the end of a big mod I have A LOT of backups. lol.

I assume you mean you updated to the 1.5 beta? If so, you've just confirmed for me the same problem that just shot Open Cities Skyrim to hell. At least for now. Any and all cell transitions to and from the modified areas results in an instant CTD.

PerChance, is your cell NavMeshed?

If it is, try deleting the NavMesh and try again.
