Should I move from Mage classes to Archer classes

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 8:24 pm

Helllo everyone *gives fishy sticks*

I love playing a mage and always have but it seems the dungeons (especily dewmer) seem tailored for sneaking in the shadows with bow and dagger. Do you think its effective that a mage (more like Spellknight) make a archer class that is completly void of magic?

Will the change..the shift if you will be difficult or will it be a smooth one I want your thoughts!

Don't bother. Sneak archery is incredibly repetitive and dull, completely devoid of any challenge. Well, if you don't care about challenge and only want to explore then it's the perfect build, otherwise stick with your mage.

Archery is insanely fun - sneak mode for the first shot, then just shoot as many arrows as needed until they're down. If you want to avoid magic, my archer carries a dagger, 'just in case'.

And yes, that's the beauty of Skyrim - it recognizes that people change, and over time you can adapt to your new build :)

Sneak archery can be fun if you force yourself to unsneak as soon as you make your first shot. Otherwise, it gets boring.

Simple answer to this. Get Bound Bow. Archery + Magic = varied fun

Oh yes! Archery + Magic!!! Bound bow is fun, especially if you take the Mystic Binding perk to fill your soul gems.

Mages can be sneaky as well. I love playing both classes, but you can build a sneaky mage - get Quiet Casting perk and raise your sneak skill. You won't get sneak criticals, but it's still viable and your sneak eye won't usually open all the way, so keep blasting away! Or your mage could always carry a dagger and you can have some sneaky melee fun too.

it's fun but the other users are right Archers are overpowered, it's quite fun though.

I want to love archery, I really do, but...I find it incredibly dull and repetitive, even with a non-sneaking character.

Mages, on the other hand...that's my thing. They are dynamic, engaging, require attention, and tremendously powerful, when played properly.

these posts in succession are funny.

I prefer archery to Magic stuffs but thats mostly because we have no hotkeys (PS3) and I hate the favorites menu. I don't think it gets boring though either as with one character I use sneak+archery as a means to completely avoid confrontation. Never level your armor skill and put 9/10 level up points into stamina and by the time you reach level 20 you will REALLY need to be careful as a stealthy archer.

I created a sneaky archer character (now lvl 46); yes, it's fun, but it gets sort of dull after a while. I maxed Archery to 100, and have since switched to one handed for the extra challenge and being able to keep leveling up (playing on Master difficulty).

A few days ago I created a pure Mage (Illusion + Destruction + Conjuration) after reading an excellet post by ResidentPianist, and I'm having a blast; tactics wise you have soo much to choose from; you can repeat a fight 3 times and each can be unique in how you approach it. But hey, that's the beauty of Skyrim, try one character and then another, and then another ;)

It also pays not to have a single character doing ALL the quests, but instead having specialized ones (ie: my mage definitely won't be doing the Companion/DB/Thieves quests).

Would you mind providing the link to the post by ResidentPianist? I did an advanced search and there were quite a few posts by this author. My new character is a mage, and I would like to read it.

Thanks!

And if you've acquired sneaky (Silent) Casting, then you're already familiar with the Illusion tree- home of spells that are incredibly useful for a sneaky mage. Calm/Pacify, Fury/Frenzy, etc. Sneak in, frenzy them as often as needed to taste until only one is left, then finish off the heavily-wounded survivor with offensive magic. Fun stuff. Two tough monsters? Calm one, take out the other more easily. Ambushed by a cave bear that's now in your face and looking for a snack? Pacify it (or fear it). The possibilities are endless.

With my current Mage, i'm going for a sneaky approach, but not putting any Perks into it. Aiming for Silent casting so i can lay Magic traps & make enemies fight each other. Then revert to Conjuration if i get spotted. I may try Bound bow for kicks.

I do like Archer/Thief/Hunter types too, and like has been said, they can get boring once you hit level 30(i havent got above level 40 with any character yet). Well, i'm sure all the Classes do in that respect. infact when i get around to doing that again, i'm going to set myself the challange of wearing no armour, just regular clothng.

Laying Magic Traps will alarm the enemies about it, alert them. Because when it hit the ground, it makes a noise. Just a heads up.
