Should I play Deus Ex again?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 5:01 am

As I′ve been listening to the game′s soundtrack for a few weeks now I feel I want to return to Liberty Island and have another go. Haven′t played it for many years now but I don′t know if I should do it. There is a chance I will be disappointed, not because of the graphics but because I may have put this game on a way too high pedestal.

I completed the game twice and got to Area 51 on my third playthrough but I never finished that round because I liked the first part of the game better. Now I want to know your opinion on this matter. Go or no go a fourth time around on Deus Ex the Masterpiece?

Yeah well, I just don′t want to quit mid-game again and wanted to know your experiences with perhaps other games. Is it a good idea to play an all-time favorite again after a few years or is it better to just reminisce about it?

What does it feel like to sit here revving your actuators while the more advanced models are playing the game? (doooo it)

Jerk!

I think it's fun to go back and play through favorite games again. I just recently hooked up my N64 and played Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Banjo Kazooie and it was just as fun as I remembered. I think the dated graphics made me love them even more. :)

Well look at that, my second serious response :)

I have been playing Link′s Awakening this year but only a little. If I have another go at Deus I want to fully focus on that but I still want to play Morrowind and Oblivion. Now where can I get more time...

If you find out where you can get more time, tell me. I really want some. :P

No you shouldn't play it because once you boot that game up again the entire world will sink into the ocean and we will be forced to grow gills and live without electronics.

In the case of Deus Ex, definitely play it again! Despite its age it's still much better than most modern games. And that's not nostalgia talking, since I only played it for the first time last year.

I would, if I hadn't finished a playthrough just two months ago :P.

A case in which I would better have stuck with reminiscing instead of playing one of my old favourites again is Emperor: Battle for Dune. It's still an incredibly fun rts, but the cutscenes that I remembered as the ultimate pinnacle of awesome actually turned out to be incredibly cheesy pieces of crap. Which didn't stop me from enjoying them almost as much as when I was a 13 year old.

Do it, and install the following:

http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-new-vision for improved graphics. If you have a modern graphics card and windows 7, you can also use the Direct3D10 renderer that comes with it. Otherwise the OpenGL one.

http://www.moddb.com/mods/biomod for some cool gameplay changes. Makes the augs more useful, by turning some of them into passive ones that only drain energy when they're actually doing something, like toxic resistance. Same for hazmat suits and body armor. It's based on the popular Shifter mod too, taking about everything from it besides the XP rewards for takedowns/kills.

I think HDTP is currently incompatible with Biomod, but the current HDTP release (same one as 5 years ago) doesn't replace a whole lot anyway.

Same. I've played it pretty much once a year since it came out. :D

OP: Do it! Try some of the graphics overhauls if you want to give it a new spin, I always find a little extra lighting and detail can make a remarkable difference to an older game.

Uhm...

Should I go left or right here?

Should I go to the movies or not?

Should I go for that beer?

Should I get a life?

What do you all think?

I actually finished my first playthrough this morning.

My thoughts? JC needs to invest into some device that filters batons and knives from looting bodies.

I know right, Deus Ex offers so many ways to achieve objectives it's hard to choose.
