i use this shout all the time. when i am traveling cross-country i like to keep it selected and randomly shout to see what creatures are up ahead. i also like to scale down the side of a mountain near a fort or spot overun by bandits and use this shout to see how many people i will be dealing with before attacking. Also, in the snow... it helps you locate those ice wraiths before they see you first.

and yes it is especially useful against the wraiths as they are fairly tricky to see at the best of times

i've used kynes peace many times too! Once there was this huge mammoth attacking us that i didn't want to kill and i calmed it down using that shout. Then another time there were two snow bears along this path next to a ruin with fighting skeletons and i couldn't fight all of them at once. So i used the shout to calm the snow bears down so i could deal with the skeletons first.

It detects all mobs and NPCs from my experience, regardless of status as living, undead or machine.

Detects everything. Good in dwemer ruins since you can spot mobs that are hidden or inactive.

As a rule of thumb, if its laying down and has armour on then it will come to life.

Aura Whisper is the best Dragon Shout for a Stealth Character, it's basically instant Detect life every 30 seconds.
