shrinking character size

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 7:54 pm

it should be stated this is an issue i encountered on the xbox 360, so console command suggestions need not apply. but feel free to ridicule since that never gets old;)

anyway, just thought i'd share this rather interesting observation with you like-minded folk here. actually, i'm more concerned that i might be going crazy, so i'm really hoping someone else out there in the skyrim community might be able to confirm this oddity as well. so after 120+ hours of gameplay, i've noticed my imperial character has been showcasing a more "slight" stature as of late. he's shrinking basically. i wasn't entirely sure until i ran around in third person and noticed most of the imperial women towering well above my character. it should go without saying, but by threatening my delicate male ego in such a cruel way sort of undermines any emersion this game has promised.

anyway, i decided to start a new game, same race, just to verify if this has always been the case and maybe i've been overlooking it until now. well, after testing this theory with a new character i can say with the utmost confidence that my character is definitely shrinking. i'm pretty sure i'm not going crazy, at least not yet, so the next order of business i would imagine is to yell at bethesda to fix this, right? anyway, let me know what you guys think, especially if any of you have had similar issues. later chapz

[censored]. i think i might have posted this in the wrong forum. not entirely sure. again, i'm trying to assess if this is some type of bug, glitch, or even some weird gameplay progression, in which case it may resolve itself.

so no one has any experience with this or knows if this might be addressed in a later patch? probably wouldn't be retroactive anyway...

Never noticed that "feature". I do sometimes experience the 1st person camera stays in 'crouched' mode even when you are standing but never noticed any 'shrinkage' in 3rd person.

Maybe its a new level scaling feature. You know.... making the battles look more epic as your diminuative self conquers big dragons. :P

this person listed some of the known issues within the game, one of which describes the "character shrinking" i've been experiencing:

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1304683-after-120-hours-i-stopped-playing-due-to/page__st__120__p__19893752#entry19893752

in my case, the past dozen hours or so of gameplay were spent finishing up the thieve's guild storyline, completing a few daedric quests, and starting the mage's guild storyline--which incidentally is when i first started noticing the character size.

In the past few days, I've noticed my character seemed to shrink. After a few traveling through autosave areas, the size would return to normal.

no it is not. i think i described it pretty clearly so it shouldn't be that obscure. anyway, i'm hoping it might resolve itself through the natural course of play, though i really have no reason to assume this. regardless, it's kind not severe, but it's one of those things that kind of undermines the decision i made at the beginning of the game in considering my character's look/race, etc.

i'll let this topic die off, but i really want to add one last thing. in terms of future updates and fixes, i understand that performance issues should take priority, obviously, but i personally think that any issues which undermine the core gameplay should be heavily considered. whether by exploit or accident, any "occurrence" within the game that significantly undermines player choices (i.e. makes choices redundant or negates them altogether) should go under the the proverbial magnifying lens asap. in terms of how it relates to this issue specifically, allowing players to create a character of their choosing at the onset of the game, only to have some weird anomaly come by and make that choice irrelevant. home this clears up any confusion.

I've wondered if my breton has actually grown. He seems awfully big for a breton.

I had the exact same issue after I went to the Thalmor Embassy. My character is a Altmer, and is normally very tall. However during this mission and afterwards my Altmer is now of average height. Its very noticable, as in the Embassy every Altmer was a full head taller, and the dunmer barman and other humans were the same height as me. Since then I have stayed the same reduced height.

I know of the shrinking Altmer but not of the others. Strange.

I'm still giving a console command suggestion...

...because that might help find the bug, if there is one, for all the builds of the game. This sounds like a scripting bug, so it will affect all versions equally.

So, those of you on the PC could try typing player.getscale in the console. This will return your character's size. The "normal" size is 1.00. It'll also show the base value, which you can ignore, since for your race 1.00 = the base value. Nords at 1.00 are slightly larger than Bretons, etc. If your scale is less than 1.00 for some reason, something's definitely tampered with your height. Now you'll just have to go through your saves from around the time you noticed the problem, and see where the change happens.

Unlike in Oblivion, there doesn't seem to be a separate scale setting for 1st and 3rd person views. And the camera is still bolted on your sternum for whatever reason. So you'll end up looking up at everyone regardless of what your character's size is.

Just how common is this problem? I have never experienced it, personally, but is there a good chance that this will happen to me? Does this affect PC users, mainly, or console as well?

I am starting to get the feeling that Skyrim is little more than a live beta at this point with so many bugs like this.

Quest bugs aside.

Doesn't seem like a game-breaking bug, but I noticed it to. Not really a big deal.

I've fought Falmer that were shrunk down. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me, but then I realized they only reached up to my knee. Is that about the size you are experiencing?
