Skill Points in New Vegas

Post » Thu Feb 03, 2011 10:40 pm

Okay so I am just wondering, will we be able to max all of our skill again like in Fallout 3? The character I want to play will require a lot of different skills so I wanted to know if it was easy to do so.

It hasn't been said that it isn't possible, it has just been said that it hasn't been done by the team. So it'll be hard to do it, if possible. Planning on roleplaying as a demigod, then?

I wonder if it will effect skills if you go over 100%

Kind of. I want to have good barter, speech, sneak, guns, energy weapons, survival, science, lock picking, unarmed, medicine, and repair. All but explosives really and I'd like to have some points there too.

Being able to go up with your skills above valuse of 100 would be awesome, it would feel like the classic Fallout's. Don't know, if it was confirmed by the devs tho'.....

In the interview J. E. stated that fewer points were awarded per level, magazines were dramatically reduced and the most skills players were only going to max "a few skills" so, i doubt you will be able to, and i read that interview, i think that was a tongue in cheek comment about no one doing it yet.

Oh well if I can't that's okay because New Vegas will finally be here. :celebration: I'll just have to narrow it down to a more simple character.

I'm kind of glad that it is going to be harder to max out skills now. At first I was upset because I always liked to make my characters very powerful, but then I started to think about it and realized that essentially made all my Fallout 3 playthroughs the same. Looking forward to something new and exciting every time I start over.

In a recent interview this question was asked and no one has been able to accomplish this feat which I'm glad to hear.

Then you should stick with Fallout 3's standard god mode. Playing an RPG is about making choices that matter. Choose 2 skills, or 3 at most to be your primary focus and work on those while largely ignoring the others. That's how you make unique characters and retain replay value. If at the end of the game, all characters are pretty much the same no matter how you start, what's the point?

No you cant max all the skills.

What we know so far is the number of skill books has been drasticaly cut back but each book gives 2-3 or was it 3-4 skill.. still less skill points then in fo3... Also nothing like the skill bobblesheads exists and no skill perks.

What we dont know is if they fiddled with the base skill formula... that was 10 plus intel per level. Thing is its highly unlikely they made it less then 1 point per intel and I dont see them going below 5 base skill plus intel unless one of the traits can give more skill points per level.

Oh there are now skill magazines.. basicaly temp skill drugs in effect.

Also we dont know if they changed the starting skill levels but very likely they did.

1. Whats your source.

2. FO3 gave you 1 point per book, 2 if you had the comprehension perk, so 2-3 or 3-4 is more than FO3. Unless I'm reading it wrong, in which case, I'm sorry.

I hope I can max out at least 7 skills, the skills I will need to max out are lock picking,Science, and guns and if I cant I will be disappointed.

I don't think it should be possible to max out more than 5 skills by level 30.

I hope choosing which skills to max out is a decision not taking lightly. As much as I loved Fallout 3 I could pretty much just about wing everything with little fuss. I want to be in situations where I'm at a disadvantage for not having a high enough skill points in a skill and just having to accept it. As good as Fallout 3 was it was really hard to specialize.

From the sounds of it we'll probably only max our initial tagged skills and one other.

At least that is what it sounded like from what Josh told us. :tops:

How could you possibly want to max all skills? In fallout 3, I wouldn't max all skills even if I could, it just taKes the fun out of the game because it makes you a god. I only like to have a 100 in 3 or maybe 4 skills.

I really hope that maxing all skills won't be possible unless you really REALLY try hard... in such a manner that the game won't be enjoyable and maxing all skills will only be for those not caring about the game, _that_ hard.
Having to plan for a few skills will ensure more diversity between builds and ultimately the longevity of the game itself. Not to mention the realism; with hardcoe mode the immersion is alllready getting a huge improvement, mastering only a few skills will only add to that.

I'm glad you most likely max out all your skills this go around, makes your character more specialized in what they do (Like my character will have Small Guns, Speech and Repair.) and won't be as good in their other skills. Yay for no Jack of all trades!!!!!

I hope it isn't possible because it would be more challenging if you had to build your character from the ground up knowing that it would be impossible maxing out all of it's skills

On the first day of its release, I will load up the geck, and locate all the skill enhancing factors. Then I can tell you if its possible or not.

I think its great that you can't max out all your skills and have to actually think about how you want your charactor to be like. On the other hand, I hope that this means skills in the range of 60-75 (above average) and 75-90 (very good), are usefull also. In FO3, you pretty much had to have science and lockpicking at 100 if you wanted to see everything, (including some main quest areas.) This wasn't a problem since you could max out all but 3 (or 4) skills without really trying.

I did not like being able to max out all my skills in the game. It makes for a Jack of All Trades character which is not that much fun to play.

I also remember an interview where the Skill Magazines are supposed to be Temporary Boosts, and the Books are Permanent. Not sure why knowledge in a magazine is not persistent.

I hope you cannot max everything. It cuts into roleplaying. If you are good at everything, you are just a Mary Sue wasteland god.

I don't play a lot of rpgs, but I think rpgs should be about how your choices impact your character. You should have to choose between things, rather than maxing everything.
