It's because of the poor AI why I don't use companions. I don't use horses either as much as I would like to because of the same issues

I had Farkas ruin a sneak tactic for me doing the "Proving Honor" quest for The Companions. I wa splanning on sniping 3 Silver Hands with my bow, but as soon as I hit the first one, he went on the attack. Quest related followers fail because you can't give them commands. Lydia, on the other hand, is not a problem because I can tell her to "Wait here", go snipe multiple targets, then go get her. I don't have a problem with that at all.

Yup, I was thinking a "toggle hold position" key like Dragon Age has would work - hit it once and the companion stops and stands where they are, hit it again and they catch back up. Even the stealthy companions are, I'm pretty sure, devoid of stealth perks, so if you have one with you you're not going to be able to take advantage of the "running does not effect detection" perk - they're going to run along with you, and get detected because they lack the perk.

If you're sneaking, and they are following far behind you, then they ought to at least have the same chance of losing you that enemies have.

Lydia "Honor to you my Thane".

Dragonborn clicks on Lydia, tells her to wait.

Lydia "Ok".

Dragonborn proceeds to go Sneaking, problem solved.

That works, though enter dialog->scout ahead->double back->enter dialog->retrace steps again is a lot less convenient than tap key->scout ahead->tap key. I do disagree with the title of this thread though (and most of the other ones in this series), it wasn't so much a "fail" as an oversight.

The stupid AI pales in comparison to that slight push you recieve when they run up on you... every... single... time...

THIS! I have a draugr deathlord thrall (via mod) and every time I stop she pushes me like 1-2 feet before she stops!! this has pushed me off of bridges and stuff (also i know it's not just the deathlord aela did it to me all the time). BUT the worst was barborus (if I spelled that right) he just constanly walked into you like his distance was set to short.
But yes I agree what there needs to be is set them to unaggresive so you attack first then they fight. With the npc editor mod thingy you can do this for any npc even creatures.

It is frustrating how most of your companions ruin your ability to sneak.

It's this reason, primarily, that I don't use companions in this game. Even the spectral assassin with his constant yammering is awful.

:ermm: I don't really have a problem with followers, most of the time. I play a rogue / sneak character as well. I simply bring my follower in to a dungeon, and leave them at the entrance inside.

I then lead enemies (if I don't immediately kill them, or there are multiple enemies) back to where my follower is located.

Sometimes I will place the follower in a "sneaky" spot, and lure enemies to them, working my way through the place,
and moving said follower to strategic locations. Works like a charm. Really, though, I rarely bring a follower with me.
I have a better sense of accomplishment from clearing an area myself.

Granted the follower mechanic needs help. I am hoping that a mod will fix this (I am positive it will happen).

Different commands for followers would definitely improve the gameplay.

Cheers.
