Skyrim and Morrowind

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:59 am

Im not a super hardcoe RPG gamer, but I have really enjoyed alot of Bethesda Titles.

I was just wondering if it would make sence to go back and play Morrowind. I have never played it but I from what I heard, it seemed to be better.

Would it be worth it to try it out now?

And let not turn this into a fight

Trust me man, I can virtually guarantee this will either A. turn into a conversation bashing Skyrim or B. if enough Skyrim fans arrive, it will become a fight. Heeeere we go again...

I play and love both, but in my opinion, you are going to struggle in Morrowind if you are used to Skyrim and Oblivion. It's just different in so many ways, but if you can get over that, you'll have a lot of fun exploring a lot of new things.

Totally worth the buy. Especially with all the graphical tweaks that have come out (if you're on PC).

In my opinion, Morrowind is better than Skyrim in every way, aside from graphics. It will certainly take some getting used to, but if you invest the time and go into it with an open mind (as you seem to have), you'll enjoy one of the best RPGs available. I can't recommend it enough.

You'll have your own experience with Morrowind... no one else's will compare. We percieve our reality based on our experiences. Anyone who played Morrowind before playing Skyrim will have a completely different experience than someone who plays Morrowind after playing Skyrim. We really have no idea how you will react. Don't play the vanilla game... the graphics will really detract from it. Some great graphic improvements are out there.

Everyone has their opinion. Sure, some people think Morrowind is better, some people don't, claiming one or the other is likely to start a flame war. However, I would still recommend you check it out, especially if you liked Skyrim, Oblivion and Fallout 3

As they say, better is subjective. Morrowind is my favorite game of all time, but I'm not sure I'd say it was better than Skyrim. They're very different. Morrowind just happens to be different in ways that I prefer. I'd certainly say it's worth a try, but it will take a bit of investment on your part. Morrowind's pacing is a lot slower in the beginning than Skyrim. You'll have to hang in there even if the first several hours, hell maybe even days, seem like torture.

I absolutely hated Morrowind for several days, but something kept drawing me back. Now it's my favorite game of all time. Skyrim is far more polished. Not just the graphics, but the actual game mechanics. It just feels right instantly. Skyrim seems more like an FPS to me in that you can just hit the ground running. Morrowind will take an investment and time and effort.

Depends on what platform.
Morrowind on PC? Yes, as there is a ton of mods that allow for a richer experience.
Morrowind on Xbox? No, aside from the graphics the world will become incredibly stagnant and boring.

Morrowind is rough, unpolished, under developed... essentially it's very raw. Especially when looked at through the lens of modern gaming. There are some great aspects to it however, the interplay between factions, the political atmosphere, and the richness of the culture all provide a very interesting experience. The actual game mechanics are far less rich or polished, generally I got bored of my characters very quickly and never felt any sense of attachment.

For me my character is Morrowind was a vessel to experience the world. In Skyrim my character is an actual character, he feels real and feels like I'm experiencing the world through the warped lens that I apply to him. In a way I can actual roleplay, or become immersed in my character in Skyrim far more than I could within Morrowind.

That doesn't answer your question however. Should you play Morrowind? If you have an expendable income that allows you to drop $20 (maybe cheaper in some other places) for the GOTY edition (has some updates from Bethesda plus the two expansions) then I'd say pull the trigger.

However I'd encourage you to watch videos and not be spontaneous, don't allow us to influence you positively or negatively.

In my opinion Morrowind was more enjoyable from a story and setting perspective. The combat and physics feel quite clunky compared to Skyrim, but if that doesn't bother you I'd say go for it.

If for nothing else, for the lore and background that it provides, I think it made getting into Skyrim easier to at least have played Morrowind and Oblivion, even though I didn't like them that much and played them very little.

Morrowind is a great game, but like you said you are not a hardcoe RPG player so you will face challenges. If you want to get Morrowind, but face less challenges and you happen to be a PC user, google Morroblivion and consider giving it a try. Morrowind lore without Morrowind downsides.

Won't cost much and with mods can look pretty good. You may find the combat a chore (many seem to) but if you stick with it MW has the most atmospheric and original gameworld of any Bethesda title IMO.

If you want to experience Morrowind and are too used to modern graphics and modern style combat, there is a certain "mod that shall not be named" that allows you to play Morrowind in the oblivion engine.

(it's actually quite good now.)

If you like open-world RPGs, Morrowind is far superior and definitely worth going back and playing.

If you prefer shiny new sandbox action-adventure games with RPG elements, stick to Skyrim.

A lot of people think they like open-world RPGs, when what they really like is the latter. They dive into Morrowind expecting a sandbox action-adventure experience and end up completely alienated by the RPG-style combat, lack of hand-holding, lack of railroading into a main storyline, limited fast-travel, etc. Most play for just a few hours before deciding they don't like the lack of action game combat and quit. They then come on these forums and make ludicrous remarks about how Morrowind is grossly overrated and popular because of nostalgia.

Buy it, play it. I loved it, but I played it back in its day. I don't know what you expect. The shortest way to find out is to give it a try.

Morrowind in many ways is more of a hardcoe RPG, you have no quest markers, no hand holding to that dungeouns etc. You have to in a large degree rely on exploring to find the different locations. It's not a bad game, but when I played it back in the day one thing that prevented me from enjoying it was that the wilderness felt dead. I seldom met things that was a threat after a certain level and it just felt like I was a walking god, until I continued the main quest which for some reason seemed to scale with me. Probably there are mods that will fix the feeling the world gave me, I don't know I never looked for them.

If it is better then Skyrim is a different question, a lot of people started playing TES with Morrowind and for those Morrowind will be the best game in the series. I started with Daggerfall and tbh I claim Daggerfall is the best game in the series, then you have the ones who started with Oblivion and feels exactly the same about that game. Which game is the best depends part on your feelings for the first TES game you played, expect that things like combat will feel a lot more clunky and different in Morrowind. some like it better some don't it's all about personal flavour.

There is probably loads of mods that fixes graphic, bugs, adds new things etc etc to Morrowind so an idea would be to mod it and then play it, but then you really will not get the correct feeling about Morrowind. Mods does change a game for the better or worse depending on what mods you choose.

If you′re interested in the game, buy it. Everyone has it′s own opinion, and you can only judge this game by playing it yourself.
But to answer our question direct, buy it. It is a better RPG then Skyrim, which is more focused on action.

And let not turn this into a fight

Sure. Give the vanilla game a run first(You don't have to complete it, but knowing how the game is vanilla helps). I'd recommend you do NOT install Tribunal for your first foray until you reach about level 15 or so, otherwise you get a bunch of annoying dark brotherhood attacks when you sleep.

When you pick your class, specialize in a weapon skill. And make sure you use that weapon. Your character can miss in this game, and with abysmally low skill your odds of hitting anything are ridiculously low.

After you've given it a once over, I'd recommend Povuholo's http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1155980-povuholos-tomorrowind-a-mod-recommendations-list-for-today list. Has a list to some of the better mods of the game to improve your experience. Graphics extenders, gameplay changes(Magicka regen, and the Galsiah dev mod are great), unofficial bugfixes.

When it comes to world building, culture, and storyline. I think Morrowind has one of the most believable settings in the series despite the alien feel to it. There are several distinct cultures all with their own likes and dislikes. The more imperialized folks tend to be more agreeable and the traditionalist types less so. But no one wants to be your friend right off the bat.(Except maybe Uncle Crassius Curio.)

I loved Morrowind, but I would only recommend it on PC. On XBOX you might be disappointed with the graphics, scenery and overall look of the characters.
