Skyrim crashes whole computer after menu.

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 12:46 am

So I bought Skyrim on steam today since I've just made this nice gaming rig and wanted to test it out. After downloading I can get onto the menu (play, options, tech support etc) and when I click play the menu will disappear and the cursor will come up with the little loading circle.
At that point everything starts lagging out and you can't even go to the task manager. If you even click a couple times with the mouse it will freeze the whole desktop for a couple minutes. After trying to start the game I have to restart the computer each time, and try a different variation of settings or probable causes...Its been about 2 hours of restarting now.
Things I have tried:
  • Updating directx
  • Updating video card drivers
  • changing the sound properties to 44.1hz/ 16bit and other settings.
  • Turning off all background programs running.
  • changing the graphics settings to low on menu
Here's the relevant computer specs:
  • intel i7 3.4ghz
  • Radeon 6870 HD
  • 8gb ram, I forget what make.
Thanks for the help.

It could be related to faulty hardware.

Also, why did you format the text like that? whats wrong with the default?

I copy and pasted it from the reddit skyrim bug forum but they didn't know what was up so I copy/pasted it it in here, which made all the text tiny for some reason, so I just changed it to a bigger size.

Is there any way I can test it is the hardware or not? I have already tried out deus ex and it seems to be working fine on that.

Hardware issues can only be solved by swapping out parts till things work as they should. Though that would probably be a near last resort thing to do.

Could it still be the graphics card if i can use deus ex fine? And outside of a hardware problem, could it be anything else?

Yes.

I'd run a stress test on it, myself. That may shed more light on it.

I ran the firmark stress test on it and it showed a steady incline in temp, no anomalies, and a score that was pretty much the same as the online benchmark.

Any other idea as to what it might be, or a possible fix? I would really like to play skyrim :(

Sorry.

run dxdiag, then click the Save All Infomation button. This will save a dxdiag.txt. Open the file and copy & paste its contents in a reply (in spoiler tags).

That looks... good. Well the text is all garbage, but your specs seem fine.

Where do you have Skyrim/Steam installed to (Program Files)?

Yea sorry, the text is in a normal format and then when I quote it, well, you see what happens.

The local files are installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim

Generally, I would avoid installing stuff to Program Files due to UAC restrictions, but somehow I doubt it would cause this issue. Hmm.

Install K-Lite Codec Pack.

I don't know you can try reinstalling Steam (and Skyrim) outside of the Program Files directory.

oh: Also if you have an Anti-virus active try temporarily disabling it.

As said above, you really should install Steam and the game to a dedicated gaming folder outside program files. Windows has a protection system to stop data in program files being changed by viruses that can cause games to fail when installed in program files.

I suggest re-instaling the game to something like C;/My games/Steam
Also disabled DEP and UAC in windows to ensure niether are causing interference with the game.

Unnecessary: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?p_faqid=231

And disabling UAC is not a solution, to be honest.

Almost sounds like the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1373833-skyrim-perpetually-freezes-my-computer-when-launched/. Open your task manager before trying to launch and check for unusual activity.

I had this exact same issue, and another fellow in another post had the same problem as well.

It seems that ASRock boards come with some default motherboard software that is conflicting with Skyrim - VirtuMVP.

It's software that's actually designed to boost performance of multi-core cpus in games, and it comes bundled with a lot of the new sandy-bridge motherboards, including mine.

Chances are if you built a new PC anytime recently you may have this software on your PC and it may cause this problem with Skyrim. This is not to say that the VirtuMVP is faulty software - it needs proper configuring, and I hadn't gotten around to doing it yet.

None of the other solutions to the other problems worked, and this particular symptom (computer freezing at desktop immediately after clicking the 'play' button at the launcher) is not covered under the FAQ at all - and it seems a few of us recently have been having this same issue. I would imagine it will become more and more common.

Additionally, this problem (if it persists, and the user is forced to hard reboot many times as I was) has been causing chkdisk errors on my HD because of multiple improper windows shutdowns - potentially bad stuff.

Reporting this topic for sticky, or addition to the technical support forums.
