If they do not upgrade this with a patch, I hope they'll at least include Role-playing and system improvements for their next DLC.
These improvements can be found with mods, but I rather see these in Vanilla as I hate having to download tons of mods that slows down the performance and bugs up the game.
My ideas can basically be divided into a role-playing and game improvements categories...
RPG improvements
The great thing with Skyrim is that they've managed to improve the sense that you live in the world of Skyrim instead of just playing it - by having the time flow even if you talk to people, or seeing your character work at the enchanting table while crafting items. Off course there could be a lot more to improve this experience...
My suggestions are meant to improve and promote the role-playing within the game, but in mind that some of these functions should be optional for player to activate or deactivate whenever they wish.
Re-design of the waiting system.
Instead of being able to wait whenever the player wish, they should need to sit down on a chair, stool or a bench - only then can they activate the wait function.
Optional is that they can wait while standing, but up to a very limited time-frame (example: max 2 hours). This is to make sitting down to have some sort of function and to add a bit of role-playing as it seems odd that someone would stand still at one spot hours at end.
Re-design of the sleeping system.
Instead of interacting with a bed which enables the sleep function to appear - When players interact with a bed their character lays down instead (function similar to the way players sits in chairs,) and when pressing the button that normally enables the wait function, the sleep function appears instead. This would improve the role-playing as the player feels more immersed into the world.
Optional function for fast travel.
As of now the player can fast travel to any location that has been visited before.
an optional re-design for this is to deny fast travel if the player is on foot. However if the player is mounted on a horse the fast travel option is available. But to make travelling manageable for those who prefer walking or suffered the loss of their beloved horse, there should be more wagons around that you can pay to travel with - one for every small village for example.
Eating and drinking animation.
When a player is sitting down, why not enable some drinking and eating animations to improve the experience. If the player decides to eat or drink any food or mead while sitting down, the last eaten food or drink will trigger an animation where you see the character eating the stew or drinking the drink for a small period of time. This would improve the Role-playing experience a lot!
The need of sleep and food.
This was executed in Fallout New Vegas (however poorly in my opinion, sorry,) and should be enabled in Skyrim as well. The player will see a sleep and hunger gauge that tells the level of hunger and tiredness. If any of them runs low the player are forced to eat or sleep in order to manage peak performance. Cooked food fills the hunger bar and (optional,) all cooked food needs to be eaten while sitting down.
Sleeping for only a few hours wont fill the sleeping gauge. Sleeping for 8 - 10 hours should be sufficient to fill the sleeping gauge (optional,) and sleeping for 24 hours may grant extra sleep effect. This would make the need for sleep and need for food more relevant and would force the player to once in a while visit the inn to regain his strength.
Game improvements
Some of systems that are in place needs to be improved a great deal and some even re-imagined in my point of view. As I noted before, there are mods to fix this but I rather see Bethesda improve this in their vanilla version.
Horses needs to be improved.
Com'on they're horses they should be able to sprint longer than they currently do, and why do a horse want to be in a fight. In my personal experience with horses they rather flee than join up on a fight. I suggest that their cowardly behaviour is promoted much more. Most hostile things attack my horse for no reason, I get that wolfs, bears and other hostile animals may attack my horse, but why hostile npc's?
The horses are wearing satchels on their saddles, I promote that they can be used for storage (up to a certain carrying limit off course,) Enable a storage space on the horses, and if the horses gets killed the items can be looted like any other corpse.
And finally the most important function that I believe should be added - the ability to call upon your horse. I've seen this in many games and I believe this should be added here as well. Enable a button that allows the player to call upon a player-owned horse which teleports near your area and runs up to you ready to be mounted!
Quick menu re-imagination.
I'm truly sorry but the quick menu system is terrible...
No ability to sort and enable dividers for the selected favourites within the menu, no ability to add several weapons, gears and magic's to one hot-key. An endless scrolling to try to find everything.
Please redo this one. The player should be able to sort the menu in the way they want it, put up dividers and most importantly, be able to enable hot-keys so that we can - for example press the "1"-key and one type of sword equips in the right hand and another sword in the left hand.
If my grammar isn't the best please note that English is not my native language.
