Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 9:28 am

Me and my sister had a little chat this morning, she agreed that she can play the game. Already bought this morning : )

We're going to spend the weekend in a looong introductory lesson to the game lore :P

I let my 12 year old play Skyrim no problem. He has Daggerfall on his cheesy old laptop. What about parental responsibility? Let's just say when he wanted to get Saint's Row 3, I got all Victorian.
Any slight advlt content in Skyrim fits in with the world. Oh noes, statues' briasts. Well it ain't like the real world isn't full of that sort of thing. Drugs rings. They get drug education at primary school these days. A game where you beat some guy to death with a giant six toy, with voice acting from a seriously hardcoe porm actress, however, not suitable for my kids.

I would say skyrim gets most of it's advlt rating from the dark brotherhood quest line. In the rest of the game you make a choice to kill because you are about to be killed by the person attacking you. But in the dark brotherhood quest it is all about killing unarmed people in cold blood that have not done anything to harm you.

That's a bit of.. oversimplification.

why because you having a difficult time too tell her that the game is rated M and that she isnt old enough too play it ?
is that oversimplification ? no the more you let her taste from skyrim the more crude it will be if you gotta tell her she cant play it .

Creating this topic was useless because you already made your decision .

So the question remains why did you made this topic ...thats an interesting point for me :)

I've played any age rated game for as long as I can remember.... even when I was 8 or 9 I was playing 15+ games. I've not yet gone a killing spree... yet.

The only issue is if a younger player could understand the systems and be able to play. Then again in my younger days it was all about running round doing things wrong anyway.

Yeah, I have always maintained, give a stupid violent person a violent game, you get a more violent stupid person. Give a normal person a violent game, you get a normal person who plays games. Feel free to disagree, anyone, but be sure to explain how you play violent games and stay normal if games are inherently bad.

What sort of answer were you expecting on the Skyrim forums? Anyway, if her parents think its appropriate, than its fine. No mount of moral, political or biased opinions from forum lurkers trump the will of the parents.

I agree with that. I think parents should judge on their own kids reaction to games and such to know what *their* own kids will be like playing a game, if for instance [Insert child name] would like to [Insert violence/drugs/six shown in game] in a [Insert real life situation]

It is sad that there are such cases where bad press comes off younger people who play games and do stupid things because they saw it in a game. I am not saying that I disaprove of an age rating here though. My standpoint is when I was younger and played games it was just killing the baddie or blowing something up. I never ever once questioned the complex morality of taking a life and the consequences. This was because it was a game and not real.

Then again take an immature impresionable child and let them play a game like SR3... you may find you have an issue. Also should mention that as I am only 17 when I was younger the games that were 18+ were nowhere near as violent or six filled like they can be today.

I don't get these threads, for the simple reason no one other than those people around the child knows what that particular child thinks and how s/he acts.

Like i said in the 10 year old thread:

Not meaning to come across as a complete [censored], but surely the best person to know if your daughter should be playing it, is you, no?

Why do you need my opinion or even want it as I don't know the first thing about your child. 10 year old children can vary in maturity. For example, some can be ok with media beyond their years, whilst others are best kept as far away form it as possible. As far as I'm aware, it's only illegal for kids under a certain age to buy such material, not play it or watch it. That responsibility should fall upon the parents, not some random internet users.

Basically, the game has been rated 'M' and as such, the decision should be based around that and not around the fact that, i, myself don't mind seeing some graphic death move or whatever.

Nope, we didn't make our decision until this morning. According to my personal stats I did a lot of quests [something like 70% I guess] but I have still a lot of things to do and see. Basically my concerns were directed to things unknown to me, it's not like you watch a movie and can tell if a kid is allowed to watch it, it's a huge open world where the weirdest things might be hidden god knows where, so the forum is the ideal place to ask. Anyway looks like the "dangerous" contents are those found in the DB and Thieves Guild alone, but with a little help and guidance I think she will be fine.

Now the difficult part is summarizing four eras of lore in only a day :P

Awesome. Just watch out for the crazier bits of lore. The cyberpunk / digital?punk stuff, even though that's incredibly fun---

TalOS operating system.

:lmao:

Too bad they were out of Collectors, the book would be useful for a newcomer. Now to refresh my memory, the TES http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline might help.

Well like i said for you deciding too eventually too NOT let her play Skyrim would be therefore more difficult once you already have let her play the game .

So basicly you made it difficult for yourself yes and thats the main reason why you ask the community for advice .

Second everybody agreeing with you could influence the dicision made by other parents who are strugling with the same dillema you face , thats why i would like them too see them an different kind of opinion .

Iwas trying not too get involved into this but since it was the second topic about this subject and it was boiling my blood i coudnt resist
too participate .

I wish you the best and i wish i didnt see this topic at all

Ill take my leave now and yes you all can surf too my profile because i know you do

Bit of advice... don't tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do when parenting a 13 year old girl.

That's the target audience. I don't see any problems with giving her the game.

No swearing, no drug abuse (Except for that old scrawny pale argonian junkie in the docks who is really nice about it), no alcohol abuse (Mead? Mead is cool. Mead is bee poop made from stuff eaten from flower genitals. Totally safe.), no nudity, blood looks like ketchup with default textures.
actually I don't think that's true, if 13 year olds were targetted, Everyone would swear like sailors, there would be nudity and chainmail Bikinis for all the girls and there would be violence on the level of Mortal Kombat. The average 13 year old really digs immature use of maturity.

There's nothing in Skyrim that can't be seen on the news in TV.

I was 10 years old when my parents took me to see 'Exacalibur' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082348/), which has a fair bit of "mature content". Similarly saw the Conan movies when they came out. Didn't do me any harm. Then again, I'd gotten info about the basics of human biology and reproduction before going to pre-school.

If not for the gore and sixual themes, I wouldn't hesitate to give this game to an 8 year old. Their reading should be good enough by that age for what's needed to play the game. So should be their co-ordination. It's a simple enough game that they probably wouldn't have any real difficulty.

There has been a little debate between me and my sister about her daughter, my 13y old niece. She got a brand new 360 for Christmas with Kinect Adventures or something like that from her parents and got interested in Skyrim after watching me play the game on PC. I've already introduced her to the roleplaying mechanics and by the time she had created her first character she was totally svcked in. I swear I've seen in her eyes the same amazement I've experienced more than 20 years ago the first time I played Dungeon Master. I'm puzzled on what to do next, I wonder if the time is right for a game which includes also some mature content. Not that the kid is highly emotional, actually she's quite mature for her age, but I fear that some contents wouldn't be completely understood and therefore not enjoyed as she would expect.

edit: it would be her first RPG

update: it's done, we have bought the game this morning : )

I wouldn't worry too much, the gore is limited (apart from the in-your-face decapitations) and the sixual content is rather marginal ( don't let her read Lusty Argonian Maid ;) ).

Let me put it this way. There's lots of violence on tv after say 20:00 in every country and she's probably heard about your country's ex-prime minister, Berlusconi, and is infamous "bunga bunga" parties, so she's probably used to some violence and sixual inuendo.

Yeah, they show chopping people's heads off, wolves heads on sticks and blood spatter all the time on the news

I wouldn't let a 13 year old play this game, that's disregardful.

I would depending on how they acted. Young people grew up in the internet age so have seen some messed up stuff. xD
