Hello!

So I finally got my copy of skyrim!
Happy, but I have a question. I got the game for ps3, but heard a lot about the problems that the ps3 version has had. So I wanted to ask here on the forum; shall I keep my ps3 version or shall I switch to the pc version. I tried to find out about the lag problem, but felt that I didn't get a real answer on if it's fixed or not. Maybe because I don't understand english all too well so I figured I would ask here.

PHope for quick answers because I just want to rip the plastic of and play !

try out your PS3 version and if it works fine then keep it.

Here's my experience: At level 58, after playing for 2 hours combat becomes deadly for me because by it takes 5 seconds for my sword swing to activate due to the lag. It becomes a slideshow. After reboot it becomes fine for another hour.
Here's my girlfriends experience: Crashes once per hour, every time. Very little lag so far because she gave up on the game before that started happening.

I would go with the PC version for now. I'm waiting to see if they can fix the PS3 version. By the way my problems are not isolated. In fact they're nearly universal and easily reproducible as far as I can tell.

If you have a pc decent enough go PC. You not only get a more stable platform, with console command ability, but you also will see the CK coming out in January. That will add tons of user created content.

Really depends on your computer. For example, on my computer, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+, ATI Radeon 3850 512mb, SB X-fi, 3 GB Ram. I get MASSIVE frame rate drops on medium. Medium looks the same as it does on my ps3. Even with ps3's problems, Skyrim runs much much better on the ps3.

This is not a typical experience. I hae played different Skyrim's on different PS3's and they have never had anything this drastic at all. Keep in mind PS3 version is still viable OP. I have a 3 year old PS3 and it has only crashed once and has no lag.

For comparison sake my pc stats are:
Intel Core i7-860 @2.8ghz
EVGA HTC 480 1.5gb card
16gb DDR3 RAM
850 watt PSU.

My game runs with everything I can set to ultra on ultra and everything i can run on high at high. Still plugging away at 50 fps. I was able to make my pc lag after console spawning 30 bandits kill them and repeat 7 times.

All three platforms have had problems. Since you have the game, I'd try it out on your machine.

If you head over to the Hardware/Software section and select the PS, you may get better info.

Not to mention how much better it looks.

For me the number one reason to buy a TES game is the support for user created content (mods), so I would never buy it for a platform where you can't use mods. So IMHO it's better to get the PC version.

Get a Radeon HD 4970 with 1GB vram, a 64 bit os and maybe another GB of ram. Shouldn't be too expensive, I run the game on a similiar system with high settings and highres texture mods with decent frame rates.

Definitely go PC. I started out on the PS3 like you, but then I ran into the massive framerate drop and a few game-breaking glitches that could easily be fixed using the console on the PC version. If you have even a half-way decent computer that was bought relatively recently, you may be able to get smooth gameplay at medium or high settings. Plus you can play around with mods and either fix a few things you don't like about the game or add completely new functions and ways to make the game even more immersive.

PC for certain. I actually got both and the ps3 is a simplified version imo(like Civ, FO, etc) and the ps3 version isnt bad so much as it is just a simpler version. The PC has ALOT more built-in replayability purely because of the modding community and what they bring to a game. The CK isn't even out yet and there are hundreds (thousands, maybe? by now) of mods out there that greatly enhance the game. And then when you consider how much better the game looks on PC(as well as all those mods out there making it look even better.....) well, it makes the PC the clear winner. The only thing is, as some have mentioned, how good of a machine you have. It does not mean you can't play the game on a lower end machine(as long as you meet the minimums of course), you just won't be able to blast along like a powerful gaming PC can.
I have a very nice machine with dual video quad core yadda yadda myself, and it just smokes! Great game!

If you have a decent PC, go for it. Medium is about the same as the console versions, so if you can run it nicely on medium then that's basically equal to the console versions. Except you can use mods, the console, tweaks etc.

If your computer isn't up to scratch however, don't bother. Nothing destroys immersion like trying to play a game at lowest settings with 10fps.

PS3 has major problems. Try yours out, if it still works smoothly after 40 hours gameplay with a 6MB+ save file then great. If not, go PC.

PC all the way - I haven't been this excited about a modding community ever - in a couple years time this game on pc is going to possibly be the best thing ever created in the universe

After a while (after January) there will be very awesome mods. And these mods are only for the pc version. I wont miss them.

I would go for pc. You can get alot of mods to make your game experience much better. As one person posted to fix a crash problen go into My Games/Skyrim and rename the Skyrim and SkyrimPrefs to, Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini the game will read these better and you wont crash unless you make excessive use of the console commands.

multiplayer?

You have a source for that - like someone in Bethesda.

Several posts yesterday said no. Unless you think someone will mod it. And even that will involve re-writing a lot of the code - especially quests, and would take quite a long time. There's more to multiplayer than just installing an overlay that allows more than one player to be in the game at the same time.

it's going to be 8 months or so before this is polished, but it's already pretty advanced.

Actually the console versions run a mixture of medium and low. Mostly low settings though.



I'm jealous .

I have a nice machine with dual video cards but turning on Crossfire actually reduces my FPS by a ton, even on latest preview driver + latest CAP.

I do get 40+ FPS outdoors / cities with one card though, so not too bad. That's ultra + tweaks too, ugristoload=9.
