Skyrim has horrible controls compared to Oblivion!

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 2:14 pm

In Oblivion, I loved the Spell wheel that allowed you to instantly change your spell in the midst of combat. In Skyrim, the game pauses every time you change a spell, it is madly annoying! Its like if your getting hurt bad you gotta keep changing to restoration. Isn't there some way to quickly change spells without the game pausing? It is really annoying.

Well, those are hot keys, not really controls, but I get your point. I made a thread like this 2 days ago and I wholeheartedly agree, 2 hot keys vs 8 is a joke. The favorites menu would be cool if they didn't take away 6 of our hot keys to implement it.

Oh, and if you hold the left or right D-Pad button (360) on the favorite menu on the spell/weapon/whatever you want hotkeyed it will hot key it to those buttons.

This works on PC, not sure about other platforms.
Assign the Spell(s) you want to your favourites list. Open up your favourites and while highlighting your item assign it a hotkey (1 to 8)

I hated the wheel because it would never work for me, i would try to go to one thing then it would go to another thing because i svcked at getting it at the right angle for something that's not "up" "down" or what ever...

Worked in Oblivion because weapon always went to right, shield to left, spell to 'spell' key. With Skyrim's equipping to hands, I would have thought hotkeying a set of equipment, one left hand and one right hand item bound to one key, would make more sense than just one item per key.

Count me among those who had difficulties hitting diagonals properly in Oblivion. I don't mind the pausing so much.

Thats actually how I thought it was setup from watching pre launch vids for dual wielders before I bought the game.

I actually like the favorites menu. I have trouble reaching past 5, so my oblivion looked like this: 1 - Weapon. 2 - bow/spell, 3 - Light Spell, 4 - Healing Spell, 5 - Whatever it is im using spell (usually conjuraiton or alteration). #5 would get very little use. and *none* of the others would. ever.

But I can definetely see why someone more proficient with that hotkey system (someone that isnt me. Im terrible with it, I have no problem admitting that.) would get annoyed at not having the option. A lot of the game's issues feel like that, to be honest...no options.

Not to mention you actually FELT like a nimble thief or assassin back in OBV. Where you could jump into a crouch/vice versa and move faster the more your character progressed, and JUMP AND ATTACK WHILE SPRINTING/SWIMMING. This game took a giant step back thanks to the 11.11.11 deadline. Shame it still hasn't been addressed.

Really, anyone who claims the controls in this game are better are just woefully blind fanpersons. I'm a fan of this game despite its many shortcomings also but I won't be silent about what I find disappointing. However can Beth make the sequel better if they don't hear what opinions are all around?

Imo Skyrim has ridiculously better controls. There was nothing worse than pinwheeling backwards from some horrible boss, and trying to move the cursor around on the favourites wheel trying to select something specific in a panic. Now, the aesthetics of the menu interface..? That was a mistake.

I think we're talking in-game movement mechanics, not user interface ergonomics. Though the UI was poorly done as well...so yeah.

I only used 4 of the 8 Hot Keys in Obl. Just because of the pain it was to get the diagonal selections to activate. They worked fine if you held it long enough to pull up the wheel, but tapping on the fly svcked.

I am not sure why Skyrim is set to just two. They could have done something different. The Left Bumper is not used. Now that I moved to PC, one of the first mods I looked for was one that allowed more function of the Xbox controller.

Now I have 4 HotKeys and holding the Left Bumper, I have 4 more.

Now, if someone could just fix the DW mess...

Cool opinion bro.

I dont share it.

To me both can't compare to morrowinds.

I had to mod oblivious to hell and back.

God knows what they were thinking when they got rid of the perfect 8 hotkey system for the crappy favourite menu.

I'm not sure what the evidence is that this was changed because of the deadline. It seems to me that keeping speed and jumping the same was a design choice, rather than a "bugger, we forgot to write that part into the code! Never mind, we have to release it tomorrow..."

"How Would Apple make a video game?" :teehee: Or perhaps "hotkeys are too spreadsheety"? :P

Skyrim has the worst UI i've seen so far, and i've played console ports that don't support mouse! (They work pretty nicely with a controller :hehe:).

I honestly think the movement mechanics were better aswell. Everything just felt more fluid than Oblivion.

Skyrim's combat is so far the best from an Elder Scrolls game.

It's the hobbling of spellcasting that I hate the most. I didn't need a free hand to cast as spell in Oblivion, and it had that separate key/button. I don't know who thought it would be an improvement to force you to free a hand before casting, particularly in a game that has simplified just about everything else from its predecessor. It would be nice to be able to assign a spell to the shouts/powers button, and press it once when needed, instead of (1) bring up the favorites, (2) scroll to spell, (3) select spell with RT, (4) cast spell, (5) press R on the D-pad to bring back my sword.
