Skyrim & Kinect

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 12:35 pm

I'm kind of surprised that Skyrim had "0" kinect support. I think it would have been awesome. Imagine instead of the shortcut menu activated by "up" or "down" on the D-pad, you can just Shout Out Loud (no pun intended) which weapon, spell or armor you wanted to use. Kinect could have been perfect for this. As long as the Kinect is used as a supplement and not to heavily relied on, like the Demo of Ghost Recon, it could have been amazing.

Since Kinect is about to move to the PC, I can't wait to see what the MOD community will do with the technology. Too bad I game on console. Here's hoping for Kinect 2.0 Support for the next generation when we are visiting the jungles of Elsywer!

What do you think?

LONG LIVE THE DRAGONBORN!!!!

being able to fight your own sword battles would be amazing, especially as I can handle one in real life!

On PC I'll just stick with mouse+keyboard.

I really don't feel any urge to flap my arms around or shout voice-commands. But to each their own I suppose. As long as kinect doesn't become mandatory I couldn't care less about it.

As long as it doesn't become mandatory AND it doesn't take away any kind of development time away from other areas of the game, then I wouldn't care. However, as is typical with these fad marketing stunts, the regular game controls would inevitably suffer some odd function as a result.

Look at the UI in Skyrim as it is because it was designed around a handhold controller with limited buttons. Clearly no effort is made to make separate UIs for different platforms, so something like kinect would cause non-users of it great frustration.

as long as its not mandatory its fine, I like playing skyrim on a slow day at work, and having to shout and run around flailing my arms would kinda scare costumers before they even get in the door :S

I don't think Skyrim via kinect would be a good idea...

On the other hand, just think of the work-out you'd get, mimic-ing the combat motions and having to walk and jump to get places. I'd probably be more inclined to use horses then if I actually had to do the walking, myself.

would be quite cool to dragonshout and use your weapons! if each individual normal spell had an associated word or chant that would make it cool for mages too.

One thing you need to realize is the difference between the game and the engine. The engine is what the game developers work in to make their game. Fallout and Skyrim use essentially the same engine but have a different game built in them. This engine would have to be severely modified to support Kinect, which would mean a huge outlay of funds and personel to accomplish what might be worthless in the end.

Only thing it would be decent for is head tracking like a TrackIR, so you can look around with actual head movements.
Maybe the Kinekt on PC will make it a mainstream thing in games instead of requiring specialist geat and having to wear something on your head, I know there are trackers that don't require hardware but they can't beat the accuracy of TrackIR or other tracking software that uses hardware.
Once you get used to TrackIR you miss it in every game that deosn't support it.

There is a video on YouTube where someone does this through their pc. It looks rather tedious, although the voice commands would be very helpful. Specially with the stupid favorites menu. Just name your spell and it auomatically pops into your hand.

I just thought of this because I hate the shortcut menu. It Pauses the entire game so I can simply change a weapon or spell. I think it would be fun and more realistic if I could just say the weapons name or spell and it changed. Pausing the game in the middle of a battle with a troll kind of takes the action away from me personally. I for sure don't want it implented in some kind of mandatory way and I definetly don't want to go waving my arms around. I just thought voice commands would have been awesome.

Kinect would not work, when you get into the nitty gritty and assigning control settings. The Playstation Move would be a better fit, even if I do hate it with a passion.

I humbly disagree IGG. A lot of games since the OG XBOX have used voice recognition to control certain game aspects. And that was far before the Kinect. I remember playing what I think was a Rainbow Six game with voice control. It was great.

Oh, I just assumed based on the posts that everyone was talking about complete Kinect control. But now that you mention it, yelling "FUS RO DAH" into a mic sounds amazing.

Not a fan of Motion Controls, and as far as I'm concerned have definitely added nothing to games I have played with the feature.

Sort of like the whole 3D fad going on, its a big resounding... so what?

That being said, as long as it isn't the selling point of the game and devour countless hours of developer time...

Meh, why not? May as well throw multiplayer in too...
