Skyrim Launcher Won't Load

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 9:48 pm

Hello,

My Skrim launcher out of Steam won't load. I get an error message from windows every time I try to launch the game.

I recently downloaded AMD's Catalyst Control Center and played around with the settings. Upon realizing that the graphics looked worse, I switched back to defaults and uninstalled the control center. Now I can't launch Skyrim.

Any advice?

My GPU is an AMD Radeon HD 6870.

Thanks!

Try launching the game directly from the .exe. By default it should be located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\TESV.exe

If using a non-64 bit OS remove the "(x86)" from the file path.

It says "Skyrim Launcher has stopped working" . Then Windows trys to find a solution and comes up short.

You shouldn't get an error message about the launcher not working if you're using the TESV.exe as it bypasses the launcher altogether.

Anyway, here's something to try: Go into your Skyrim folder and delete (And make backups) or rename both the SkyrimLauncher.exe and the TESV.exe and then go to your steam library, right click on Skyrim, click on properties, select the "Local Files" tab, and then select "Verify Integrity of Game Cache".

Oh, I was using the SkyrimLauncher.exe file.

When I try to use the TESV.exe I get an error message saying that "d3dx9_43.dll" is missing from my computer. I'll go ahead and delete the two files you mentioned and verify the game cache through Steam.

Same deal. I deleted the two files and Steam reinstalled them, to no avail.

I'm now downloading the latest AMD drivers.

From what I gather d3dx9_43.dll is a Direct X file. Try updating Direct X and see what happens.

No problem. However, I will accept you shouting my name in the streets wherever you go as from now on as thanks.

I get a similar message- 'Skyrim has stopped working'. I've done everything mentioned here.

I'm using windows 7 home premium 64-bit. All drivers are up to date.

That's what I had to do! Thanks to SimpsonFly's advice, I downloaded the newest Direct X and all was right in the world.
