Skyrim Looks Good

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 6:33 pm

After weeks of wanting Skyrim, I finally bought it at a local Gamestop. I had just enough to get it used, but not new. Got home, and unfortunately it is an 'unrecongnizeable disk'. It has to be the disk, not my Xbox. I got my Xbox this past Chriistmas, and it is the Gears of War edition Xbox - and all my other games (Red Dead, Assassin's Creed, etc) all run perfectly normal and fine on it.

We're going to look at a truck tomorrow though, so I'll stop by Gamestop and exchange it for a new one. Probably fuss at them and get a brand new copy of the game :) .

------

Anyway, I've been looking into this game for a while now. It all started after I watched a YouTube video on "SEPHxxFORxxLIFE" channel, which he had some awesome 'Assassin' gameplay - and the video instantly won me over.

I've played Morrowind in the past, but had a bad experience with it. I've also played Oblivion and had a slightly better-yet-still-bad experience with it. I've also played Fallout 3 and had a decent experience with it.

But all the reasons I disliked Morrowind and Oblivion seem to be gone while watching Skyrim gameplay.

Looking forward to playing it... once I get a working copy anyway.

Just posting is all. I'm new to the forums and to Skyrim... sort of like a 'Hello' thread or whatever.

Originally I was going to ask about a build, but decided not to. But I am doing that now in the other forum.

Just wondering, what did you dislike about Oblivion and Morrowind?

Gameplay.

Yeah I know that sounds dumb, but let me explain.

It just felt... unprofessional to me... and cheap... but Bethesda isn't that type of company I know.

The mechanics and the 'feel' of the gameplay just felt very unprofessional and very outdated compared to their release years. I prefer Third-Person gameplay, but the Third-Person Gameplay in Morrowind, Oblivion, and even Fallout 3 were just horrendous. And I did not like how the blocking system/combat system worked either. I can't explain it, and I can't put my finger on the word, but all I can say to describe it is that it felt 'cheap' and 'unprofessional'.

Don't get me wrong though, the size of the map and NPC's, Cities, and overall goal/premise of the game itself was very well done and well thought-out, and I enjoyed that. But the actual gameplay itself just felt... wrong and boring.

On Morrowind I got to Vivec (after Cauis Cosades told me to go there) and did some exploring before I stopped playing it; on Oblivion I stopped playing after I fled those tunnels and I visited a stone city, and me and my horse got in a fight or something, then I stopped playing.

But yeah, the Gameplay just did not suit me well.

That's understandable. The gameplay (mainly combat) of Bethesda games isn't really there best points, but Skyrim has been much improved (in my opinon), and the Third-Person views are actually playable unlike before.

Cool, and thanks. I noticed in Skyrim Blocking was a Manual option instead of an automatic one like in previous titles. I also noticed the improved movement in Third-Person. Not to mention the better combat in the game.

Well I'm sorry to tell you but the gameplay in Skyrim in VERY similar to Oblivion's. Of course, they've refined it and made tons of additions too, but in the end the combat is basically Oblivion's on steroids.

But if you can get over it, you'll find a pretty good game. I myself don't think it's the greatest in the series, but to each their own I guess. I just couldn't stand how LITTLE hidden stuff there was, but still, it's a good game. If you like to role-play, it's actually the best one in the series to do so in

Also yeah, 3rd person got a REAL improvement, as well as the animations to go with it. I wouldn't say it's on par with Assassin's Creed now though, as it still feels kinda rigid, but still, it now looks like a game of the 21st century for once lol

Well, like I said, I will be back tomorrow after I return the game and everything and hopefully have good things to say about it.

Right now though, I need to get some sleep. Been everywhere today.

i kinda agree with ofnir, at least on the second part, as in it's all too open? idk how 2 put it rly... anywayz i think the mechanics were baws compared to oblivion, though i suggest changing the difficulty once you get the hang of it, as it will be too easy (I'm on adept atm.

We'll go exchange it later today.

Questions if you don't mind me asking:

1. In Skyrim do you choose Major/Minor Skills like in previous games?
2. Do you have Attributes like Strength and Willpower? If so, do you have to choose 'favored attributes' like in previous titles?
3. Do you pick a class like in the previous titles? Or is it totally different this time around? If you pick classes, I assume custom classes are still here right?

I do agree game-play in MW and OB were the weakest points for those games

I think u will love skyrim although the quest lines are shorter

To the OP: I'm the opposite, when I play the beautiful looking Skyrim I find myself wanting to play Morrowind gameplay. The learning curve for MW is, of course, much deeper than Skyrim.

Reposting these just in case no one saw them:

@Vadagar: Shorter Quest Lines? I wouldn't notice it anyway cause I barely got anywhere in any of the questlines on MW or OB. I did a few Warrior and Thief guild missions and that was it. I attempted to do so Imperial missions, but never got around to doing much of them. As opposed to the popular choice, I prefer shorter quest lines in a way I guess.

@Iorca: Oh well, I'll see how it goes. I liked the MW and OB games, but they had those Gameplay flaws that I disliked. Skyrim seems to have gotten rid of those flaws (I have watched a trillion vids on the game) and looks nicely done.

no class whatsoever, you just get a bonus is some skills depending on your race you start with. thats it

the questlines are pathetically short, like 10 quests per line or so follow up with boring random generated quests without any point of doing them

Thanks, that's all I needed to know.

Well are there at least more Questlines than the past games?

Yeah, it happens. Sometimes there are games that are good but there are certain elements that practically ruins the whole experience for the player. Luckily for me MW flaws didn't kill my experience. I stayed long enough to appreciate the rest of the good stuff of MW.

Skyrim has many good improvements but what is killing me from my experience is how shallow it has become. In the beginning, everything seem to promise so much but then reality starts to sink in.

@TjByrum

1)haven't play anyother TES not sure what you mean
2)If you mean perks, yes you can increase your perks like increasing your 1 handed weapon skills or power of your destruction spells
3) There is no class system you just make a character you want (e.g archer who use destructions spells).

After a long day, I finally got home to play Skyrim.

-----

I chose to be a Nord. After making my way to Whitrerun and killing a Dragon there, I was told to go to the Greybeards. I found it quite hard to get there, as I took the wrong path and attempted to 'climb up' the mountain and got very frustrated, so I decided to go to Windhelm where the Stormcloaks directed me.

Once in Windhelm, I joined the Stormcloaks and killed the Wraith and all that good stuff, then I set off to find the Greybeards again. I still met with the same frustration, but eventually found the steps and facepalmed. Anyway, I climbed them until I found a Dragon, which I defeated after a very brief battle. Afterwards, found an Ice Troll, who was amazingly strong compared to the Dragon, and I died. The Ice Troll killed me three or four times before I finally charged past him, evading him.

I finally made it to the Monastery, where my Xbox controller was going dead. I attempted to plug my Xbox Controller up to recharge, but my pinky hit the touch-sensitive power button and my Xbox cut off. Annoyed, I just called it a day.

-----

The game feels very accesible, thought-out, and definitely stands out to me. I can finally play in Third-Person view without being sickened by the horrendous animations that were in Oblivion and Morrowind. I like how I choose when I block, and I like how my attacks nearly always connect, as opposed to the previous installments. And I like how the Perks work, and the leveling. I read elsewhere the game is 'dumbed down' which most people dislike - but it makes the game seem much better in my opinion.

So overall, I am extremely satisfied, and I look forward to playing this game more. It is a great game thus far.

Love it.

Here's a question:

I was fighting this Imperial, and I just held down the Block button and let him continuously hit me and it ranked up my Blocking quite a bit.

So if I make the difficulty go up very high (like on Master) and do this, will my Blocking go up even faster?

The good thing about skyrim is the fact that you can make up your own playstyle.
My main character is heavy armored with dual swords, and im enjoying it alot.

If you like to, you could make a spirit monk to (unarmed Khajiit wearing robes and often using destruction or something).
It is all possible.
