Skyrim in 3D Vision on a 3D HDTV

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 10:19 am

I've read so many forum posts and game site reviews raving about Skyrim in 3D Vision that it's convinced me to jump in and try it. I was planning to buy the Asus VG278H Lightboost monitor, until it dawned on me that the game could possibly be spectacular on a big 3D HDTV.

I'd love to hear from anybody who is playing Skyrim with this kind of setup. What's the experience like? Did you have to use the glasses the TV ships with, or do you use the Nvidia glasses? Any hacks or mods necessary to make the game run? Is the picture dark like on pre-Lightboost monitors? (I'm guessing good TVs can output more light than a monitor anyway.)

Thanks!

I am moving to PC and considered this as well. After much reading, I concluded that a 24" Monitor @ 30" w/ 2ms, Pixel Pitch of 0.27 and larger FOV is visually better than a 52" HDTV @ 8' w/ 10ms, PP of 0.6 and a much smaller FOV.

Now for the 3D part. I found a site that tested 5 games in 3D (in December) and compared them. None of them really stepped up to having that "wow factor". The result was that while Skyrim did show a better outcome, it still did not justify the means.

Thanks for the input. I've read enough other reviews and, more importantly, user feedback from people on this forum, that say 3D Vision truly transforms the game experience such that I'm already sold on trying it. I'm just hoping to get some hands-on intel from 3D HDTV Skyrim players, perhaps even some who've transitioned from using a 3D monitor.

In terms of refresh, it seems like that shouldn't be a holdup, as I see some 3D HDTVs supporting 240hz, like this http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN55D8000-55-Inch-1080p-Silver/dp/B004N866SU/ref=pd_sim_e_1, and others 120hz, like this http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BRAVIA-XBR46HX929-46-Inch-Local-Dimming/dp/B004QX6E4S/ref=sr_1_15?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1328278865&sr=1-15 and http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIERA-TC-P65VT30-65-inch-Plasma/dp/B004NPND20/ref=sr_1_21?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1328279752&sr=1-21.

Visually it's awesome! I really love the 3D experience of skyrim.
One thing i have noticed is that load times are significantly longer when you run the game in 24fps/3D. I started a thread about it here, but didn't find any solution to the problem.

Thanks Lugiber. Could you please let me know what 3D TV you're using and if you're using the Nvidia glasses or the ones that came with the set? Cheers

For a while I moved my PC over near my television and played from that.

I have a 73 inch Mitsubishi 3D TV...
similar to this one, just the previous year's model...
http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/tv/WD-73840

My older model uses Nvidia's 3D technology, not sure if the new models still use it. But, I was able to run Skyrim in 3D in 73-inch glory. I had the older Nvidia 3D vision kit, so I just used the Nvidia 3D emitter plugged into the PC and the Nvidia glasses. I eventually moved my PC back to my "PC nook" in my apartment as I need a proper "desk" surface to mouse on. Luckily my PC monitor has 3D too, but I sure miss that taste of 73-inch 3D glory.

Do note that running in 3D you WILL take a considerable frame-rate hit. I took enough of a hit to where I had to lose a lot of my texture mods. Which svcked, although the 3D effect, in a lot of ways, really makes up for that. It's hard to explain until you've seen it and played it. Depending on how beefy your PC is, you may be able to do 3D and still keep all of the texture mods.

Hmmm, I never noticed any longer load times when I ran the game in 3D. Load times were exactly the same for me as without the 3D. I'm not saying your not getting that, but I wonder WHY you might be getting it. I run all SSD drives in my PC, are you running SSD drives or mechanical drives?

If you go the HDTV route I think the FPS is limited to 30 at 1080P and 60 at 720P. I recall reading that HDMI cannot handle anything higher and that you use the glasses designed for the HDTV. I have found info on home theater 3D gaming in the past in the forum below.

Yeah, the AVS forums are a good source of info. The High Def Forums are another good source with a dedicated 3D section.

Straton, thanks so much for your account. It's great to get confirmation that the game runs with monster size screens and delivers that immersive experience you're talking about. I fortunately have a fast cpu and 2 GTX 480 cards, so Skyrim should run smoothly even with the added load of 3D Vision.

Now I just have to figure out what 3D HDTV would deliver the best 3D Vision experience. Seems like high brightness and fast refresh are particularly important considerations. I'm also a bit confused about what circumstances I would or wouldn't need http://www.nvidia.com/object/3dtv-play-overview.html.

Thanks Harley and Straton for the forum links. Will check them out.

I just got the ASUS VG287H with 3D vision 2. I am running it on an "old" i7 2.6GHz with one nVidia 480GTX and it looks incredible. Almost all maxed settings. I did have to turn down shadows from ultra to high. I also use FXAA alone without regular antialiasing (no jaggies at all). Your system will shred it with everything maxed out. If you add in TESVAL or SkyBoost plus the newest beta Nvidia drivers you will get 20-40% increased frame rates from this to compensate for any reductions added by the 3D. I use several high qual texture mods like 2K Textures, Realistic water textures, High Res Texture DLC. I eventually plan to upgrade to a Kepler generation GPU when they come out this spring/summer, but honestly it plays great even with my 3 year old equipment.

The effect on Skyrim is breathtaking. You are transported to another universe. This is not an exaggeration. It feels like a portal to another universe. After playing 225 hours without 3D, I feel like I have a brand new game. I simply walk around in awe looking at scenes, rotating items, ect. The addition of depth makes you feel like you are living in another universe which is exactly why you play games like this to begin with.

I want to emphasize the need for a really bright and high contrast capable HDTV. Even with 3D vision 2 and light boost, it can get a little dark. Let us know what you settle on.
