Skyrim -- what are they working on?

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 1:03 am

They haven't updated that post in a month since patch 1.3 was released.... well.... ?

I can only imagine its feasible to update the topic at least semi-regularly?

It can give the impression that they forget (even intentionally of course) that there are still tons of players waiting for other fixes, patches, etc??? Or have they had enough of Skyrim already and decided to move onto the next game.....

Unless they are all on a really nice long vacation.... can't say I wouldn't enjoy a few more weeks on my own schedule.......

I refuse to speculate on what they're cooking up since that's useless... but hey, at least keep us in the loop a little bit?

"We're addressing that in the 1.4 update planned for this month."

"After the holidays" has been clarified to mean "this month."

"It can be fixed" has become "it will be addressed."

The forumgoer is silently (key word) supposed to assume that they are SO busy fixing things, they can't press a few buttons on a keyboard and click 'Post' to inform the masses.

And, silently, the forumgoer is supposed to deal with it.

Short answer: They're working on doing all the stuff they were supposed to be doing before the game was released.

Slightly longer answer: If the 1.3 patch is any indication, they are going to take a very long time to produce a minimal update. In the mean time, those of us that recognize shoddy work when we see it are growing increasingly frustrated with the quality of this game. Two months in and three patches later, and yet a significant number of quests, etc are still buggy. I hope that gamesas realizes that by "later this month" many people will be tired of waiting and will have moved on to something else (like playthroughs of ME/ME2 before ME3 comes out in a matter of weeks). This will definitely influence my decision to buy whatever game they make next new and upon release.

"When it's done" can be assumed. Not a complex cipher folks. ;)

Enjoy the game, and start planning those epic mods!

People like GStaff are supposed to be our "conduit" into the workings at Bethesda, but you'll never get anything of substance out of such a PR person until the patch is physically publishing, and then there's a delay for the patch notes. And no, these PR people aren't busy fixing the game, they're supposed to be busy relating to the public - in this case the Skyrim User community.

I've never understood why these PR folk will not communicate "here's what Bethesda is working on today", and update/prioritize that list on a regular basis. The reason I've heard historically is that there is an obsessive fear of complaints and disappointing the user community. Yet, they have no fear of enduring the daily complaints and disappointments generated by their silent treatment of the user community.

Doesn't silence mean they're busy? Silence means they're silent. And it means the PR person is not busy relating to the community.

But what if something changes and they have to pull it off the list? That happens. No project plan survives contact with reality. A plan is not a promise, so anyone who posts "but you promised!!1!" needs some Moderator-delivered re-education.

Communication only helps. Misinformation thrives in a vacuum.

As was mentioned before in another thread (which I haven't the slightest idea where it went) by a moderator (of whose name escapes me) it has been indicated that what is released to the forum is often taken as a promise to the forum goers. This can cause even more unhappy people when what was mentioned is either delayed or changed completely.

What they're working on is your game.

I'm sorry, but that is a complete cop out!

Just preface it with, "this is what we are working on and hope to include in the next patch."

They could also list what issues they have identified (confirmed, actually) and what priority each of those issues have assigned to them.

I can guarantee the complaining under this scenario would be less than what we see currently.

I think they are working on telling us that the CK release has been pushed back, probably to a more totally awesome release date of 12-12-12.

But people will take everything they say as a promise! Then clearly state on all communications that a plan is not a promise. Deal with posters who insist on confusing them and then complaining as thoroughly and efficiently as the Moderating staff does with posters who insist on discussing piracy, harming children, or other taboo topics.

The old "promise" excuse has been used since there have been community managers for game developers. It was a weak excuse then and hasn't gotten any better over time.

But someone might get the wrong idea! They have the wrong idea now. They either think Bethesda is doing nothing, or is specifically fixing "their" bug. And if their bug doesn't get fixed, they get upset. Why not manage expectations now? Tell them why their bug isn't getting fixed yet - because it's prioritized behind 15 CTD or other high-priority bugs.

Transparency is scary, but it's awesome once you start.

One thing I'd love to see in the next patch is if your character has Lydia following, and you're on a horse would it be possible to give her one too. Just doesn't seem right otherwise.

Thanks for all of your replies!
I'd say we are mostly in agreement here.... and I didn't think I was alone...

1) whoever was hired as their "conduit for community / social networking" is pretty much just the opposite.... might as well have a robot instead (actually a robot might be better by comparison)

2) they fear the response of the very gamers who they supposedly want feedback from , in the forums that they created, to promote general communication and FEEDBACK ... yet... as we can clearly see it frequently only goes TO THEM and comes back as silence 99% of the time

3) concept of progress, timeline, gamer satisfaction and communication is zilch... its only about them............ and based on all of the various responses I've read between Skyrim and Oblivion.... it has ALWAYS only been about them and they don't seem to be very fond of patching their games to any sort of "complete" or at least "acceptable" state......
