A monster collecting style TES game would be pretty cool. They could finally make use of all the forgotten enemies that were found in the pre-Morrowind games, for one. Besides, who doesn't ever wonder what a pet skeever is like... during what should be illegal animal fights.
I love me some Pokemon, by the way. I would call BETRAYAL! on one that uses the graphical style of Skyrim or is realistic, though. That just doesn't work for the franchise. Not because kids play it, but because it is meant to be cartoony. Besides, cartoony doesn't mean baby stuff. It just means cartoony.
Pokemon sort of already is open world for what it is. It's a monster collecting game. You have millions of choices in what to do with move sets and the like. The series is open ended, though. Not open world. Of course, I'm a nutcase who thinks the first Metroid game is more like a survival horror game, so whatever. That said, if one can't find how a game like Pokemon is open ended, try building a team and looking at all the moves those things can do. I used to do a bit of competitive Pokemon online, and I always used a Weavile that was more or less petty crowd control and like the thief of a DnD party.
Another staple of my Pokemon team was a tanking heavy damage dealing Donphan. I had no small fry in most cases, and the Weavile and Donphan were the two Pokemon that served me quite well. Still got 'em, by the way.
