Small thing that bugs me, the angles of weapons being held i

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 3:03 am

I love Skyrim. I love all TES game. One thing that bugs me that Bethesda hasn't fixed yet is the location of how we hold our swords or weapons. I mean in first person view the sword being held is almost like upright straight. When you go into 3rd person view, the sword is forward way forward. I wish Bethesda would be able to in first person view have the same angle of the weapon as it is in 3rd person view.

Not sure why it bugs me, but just don't like how the angle changes from one view to the next. Since I never see anyone complain about it, I guess Bethesda can't fix it then. Here is hoping TES VI will be different and not the same we have in (can't remember if it's like this in Morrowind), Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas (yes I know, made by Obsidian) and now Skyrim.

Please let first person view of the way we hold weapons be the same angle as third person view.

It's not nearly as bad as it was in oblivion though. But if for example 3rd person dual-wield camera was used in 1st person, we wouldn't even see the weapons.

This annoys me as well. But what annoys me more is how they hold the weapon in first person, NOBODY holds a weapon straight up in the air, right in front of their face and then just slashes from side to side with it(if you don't believe me, go get a broom, stick, or an actual sword if you have one, and hold it and swing it like they do in first person). It's better for the most part in 3rd person, except dual wielding, what the hell is with that martial arts pose your character does with the weapons? And it looks even more stupid if you're using maces or axes.

Hey I just mentioned this. Yes it is very annoying. I don't understand how the people making the game don't stop and say to each other "Hey does that look funny to you."

I wish they just did a Mount & Blade style of first person view. Just remove the player character's head and put the camera there.

Agreed, not a fan of the 3rd person dual wield pose. I think it looks fine when moving, but when standing still it's... ugh.

I don't mind the difference in 1st and 3rd person, just because it's practical. The 1st person position would look horrible in 3rd person, and the 3rd person position would not be practical for 1st person, but that dual wield pose I really hate lol.

If that was the case, you wouldn't be able to see a lot of the weapons you are weilding.

You would still see it while you are wielding it the problem is when you are standing still, walking or just looking at something and its right there in front of my face is where i have a problem with it.

In that case you can just sheathe your weapon.

Never really bothered me..... I don't really think about the pose, because, well - it's a game. And having played first-person games for decades now, having your "hands" at the two bottom corners of the screen (or your gun, or whatever) seems completely normal.

(Meanwhile, the videos I've seen of "real first person view" mods, that have it using the third person poses? Seems really awkward - the animations don't look quite right from that angle, and not having any visual feedback - i.e, not having your equipped stuff in view - just feels wrong.)

If I'm walking through a cave/tunnel that I don't know what kind of enemies are going to pop up at any moment I'm not going to keep my weapon sieved. But it's not going to change so I guess there's no point in talking about it in the first place huh?

Yeah that reminds me, I am an Altmer, taller than most, but my eyes are at chest level. I swear the person who did this has a booby fettish. Shame on you there Beth. When in 1st person view, we should be looking at the height of that race. I was shocked the first time how low our heads go from 1st to 3rd.

Well you would think after almost 20 years, Beth would have lernt a few new things, namely poses LOL.

It works this way in pretty much every FPS ever...

Even in those it is unrealistic, you don't hold your weapon right beneath your eye all the time, yet it is needed to confirm, yes you are wielding a weapon.

Why would I need to see what weapon I'm holding to know what I have equipped? I'm not an idiot. I know what I have equipped at all times when I'm playing a game.

Do you really?

You can run for a long time, not using your weapon, in the end you'll forget what you've been using, as you're not actually holding this in your hand, you just see it.

Well I do only use 1rst person maybe 10% of the time so that does allow me to see what I have equipped but even if I was in first person view and forgot what I had equipped I could just do a quick swing to find out.

What bugs me about the dw is that you put both weapons in the same slot.. also the animations for the dw and the killcams are just like the mmorpg age of conan. It's literally like they just copied it almost to the tee.

If you study interface design (both physical and digital) and psychology, you'll discover that feedback (tactile, auditory, visual) is very important to keep people from getting confused and/or keep them fully aware of their situation.

And honestly, between the dual-hand system and all the spells/weapons/shields/whatever & hotkeys not always throwing the thing you activate into the correct hand.... yeah, there needs to be some kind of indication on the screen of what you actually have equipped. It's reasonably common to go into combat mode, and have your two hands not holding what you expect them to. Now, these things could be shown by the UI, perhaps in little circles in the corner of the screen (like the weapon and spell indicators in Oblivion), but then the "immershun" crowd would complain. Having your hands (and what's equipped in them) be visible on screen is the "less intrusive" method of providing this feedback.
