Snap to Reference help

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 10:27 am

Hey gang!

Having problems getting the imperial tower stairs sections and the door sections to fit precisely.
I've tried using snap to reference, but can't see it do anything.
Here's what I am doing, what am I doing wrong?

1. Place objects in render window as close to each other as possible.
2. Select the doors section.
3. Select shift-Q; note cursor turns to red crosshairs in a circle.
4. Hover over stairs section; note crosshairs turn white (indicating valid target to snap to).
5. Using left mouse button, click on valid target (the stairs section).
6. It should snap to it seemlessly; but it does nothing. : (

What did I do wrong?

Is it even possible to snap multiple object to reference at the same time?

In the example there are only 2 objects total. I am trying to snap the tower door object to the tower stairs reference object.

It might help to try to match their x or y coordinates manually, then click it into place the other direction a few clicks at a time. I find it's sometimes easier to line up odd shaped objects that way than using snap to. As long as you're using the direction arrows and not dragging it with the mouse it won't get out of whack.

Thanks, Balok!
I had some success with that. Matching rotation is a mistake, though!
I also change the rotate rate from 1.0 to 0.1 to get more fine control.
I also found a reference about changing one of the settings snap to grid (movement tab of preferences) to 128 or 256 to get large pieces to snap.
I also might try resetting the rotation on the door first (control k).

It looks like the snap to reference worked, using the following, However...

1. Place objects in render window as close to each other as possible.
2. Select the doors section.
select Control-K to reset the rotation - the section will spin some as it resets.
3. Select shift-Q; note cursor turns to red crosshairs in a circle.
4. Hover over stairs section; note crosshairs turn white (indicating valid target to snap to).
5. Using left mouse button, click on valid target (the stairs section).

The doors will snap to the same x, y, z plane ( if you double click on both items to compare their properties, the x, y, and z match) and here's the however.... however the rotation will still be a tad off.
Double click on the door section to bring up the properties and change the rotation speed to 0.1 or even 0.01 for fine control.
Use the up down arrows next to the rotation speed in the properties window to move it while zooming in as close as possible to watch the seams.
Exit out of the properties window and save when satisfied, and verify in-game.
