Sneak Build vs Strength Build

Post » Thu Feb 10, 2011 10:15 pm

S 3
P 10
E 1
C 6
I 4
A 8
L 9

I am weak, so I need to kill things before they get to me.

I am considering changing my faction allegiances and changing from a sneak/stealth class to a big strong baddy!!!

Any suggestions/comments on how you like your stealth class and/or your strength/warrior class??

This character is broken in so many ways. PER 5 + implant is more than enough. CHA 6 is waste of 5 points. END 1 means only 1 implant which is silly. I 4 means 90 less skill points throughout the game. AGI 8 for faster reloading time is a waste too.

What a fail.

I didn't know anything about Implants?

So you'd recommend 9 Int and 9 Endur? 1 Char? Per 5? Low Agil? luck?

Personally I went...

S- 7 (Implant)
P- 6 (Four Eyes)
E- 7 (Implant)
C- 6 (Implant)
I- 8 (Implant)
A- 7 (Small Frame)
L- 6 (Implant)

I think this build alone is good enough for any of them. Stealth or anything. Im not having any issues with AP, Weapons, or basic skills like lockpick and science. I went all guns, so I hit like a [censored] truck and I can snipe... strength could be a little higher, but you could take that out of Perception or Charisma (I also like not losing one speech challenge) so with this point system you could be very flexible and just stack points in stealth, melee, and Unarmed for a stealth build.

My sneak chracter is this
S 8
P 6
E 7
C 1
I 8
A 6
L 10
Aside from charisma they are implants giving a +1.
I advise increasing str because of weapon requirements, mine is 8 because of the anti material rifle, charisma isnt that useful, just increase int and use the points to increase speech/barter, agility isnt that useful either just enough for fast reload and silent running, also perception is only good that high for compss markers, and having ed-e as a companion makes that pointless as he boosts them anyway, so that could go down quite a bit, maye keep it at 5 then implant for 6 to get better criticals.

My current sneaker for my second playthrough (Very Hard / hardcoe) is:

S 5
P 4 (Four Eyes perk, so I left it at 5 for character creation)
E 5
C 4
I 10
A 7 (Small Frame perk gives +1)
L 5

Seems to be working out quite well. No huge deficiencies, and max skill points. Use intensive training to bump up Agility and Perception, and the other stats don't matter a whole lot. I had a hard time seeing the benefit of pumping up any other stats at the expense of another one anyway. Frankly, for how weak the level-up perks are, may as well just go with Intensive Training for half my perks, which kinda makes the whole discussion academic. Kinda disappointing - in FO 1 and 2, it was all about the perks, with this game engine it seems to be all about the skill points.

Only worthwhile perks I see for a stealth build are:

Tag! (more skill points are always nice)
Action Boy/Girl (sort of - hopefully you can sneak-kill everything, but once in a while a mob's gonna rush you... extra APs can be useful)
Better Criticals (Improves sneak ciriticals too... so **very** nice for a stealther)
Sniper (Headshots are just more sincere)
Silent Running (maybe/in theory - seems buggy as hell to me)
Living Anatomy (mainly for the HP/DT display)
Commando or Gunslinger (again, VATS is sometimes helpful/needed)
The Professional (for indoor combat)
Comprehension and/or Educated (more skill points is always nice)

And if you take 'em all, you're still left with 5 Intensive Training picks and (with 5 END, at least) up to 5 boosts from implants... like I said, makes the whole stat points discussion seem academic when it's so easy to boost them... and your other perk options are so underpowered anyway.

well, with strength you can carry more stuff and use nice weapons effectively. but with sneak you can.....uh....hide like a wuss? i go with strength

heres my LV26 at the moment.

S-9
P-4 (+ implant, 1st recon beret and sunglasses w/four eyes)=7
E-4 (+ IT and implant)=6
C-1 of course, useless crap stat
I--10
A-6 (+ implant)=7
L-6 (+ ITx3 and implant)=10

5th implant is extra DT

One-shot kill most enemies and NPCs in the game? Put a silencer on the weapon and you can pretty much kill anyone/anything with impunity and not worry about angering factions, which is nifty and useful for keeping quest lines open. Actually, with this engine, sneak is pretty damn useless for hiding... just for getting "HIDDEN" long enough to get that sneak critical off.

No combination of the two option, I use both as I like to sneak in and stealth kill and then loot the crap out of places once I have.

i dont need sneak to get a critical or a one hit kill. i have big guns and a luck of 10.

if i wanna one hit a deathclaw mother or alpha male, i can just blast em in the head with my very big rifle while crouched far away. sneak is more for sneaking past things and pickpocketing. which is pretty useless in this and F3. i dont usually have any problem getting hidden. and theres always stealth boys. mmm, stealth boys...

Here we go.

"My power-hitting build is better than your wimpy sneaker build!!!!"

Seriously, people.

Some people like to roleplay characters in a way besides maximizing strength by turning their characters into drooling, socially incompentent idiots.

Some people like to just blow stuff up.

There is no "best" build, only things which make you enjoy YOUR game more.

HA! I wish! Maxing out Science, Repair, Speech, Barter, and Medicine are enough trouble before you even start worrying how you're going to survive. The SPECIAL takes forever to work out.

If you are wanting an "optimal" character then some general tips from myself are..

Strength is important and needed to prevent penalties from high end heavy weaponry. With a Strength of 3 you will have penalties with high end weapons like the Anti-Materiel Rifle and Gobi rifle.
Perception is 5 (bumped up to 6 via implant) if you are wanting the Better Criticals and/or Sniper perks otherwise its also set to 1.
Endurance varies but going below 5 is a bad idea. For every hard point of Endurance you have you can get an implant to improve your SPECIALs later on in the game. To get all implants you need 9 Endurance.
Charisma is always 1, no question. Its a crap stat.
Intelligence, while nerfed, is still as important as it was in Fallout 3. Best to keep this as high as possible.
Agility is fine left at 5. Bump it up to 6 if you want Slayer and/or Nerves of Steel.
Luck is fine kept at 5. An implant can push it to 6 (giving access to all Luck req perks) and can be further pushed to 7 with a certain item in the game for gambling.

The only stat I would ever consider pushing to 10 is the Intelligence. Everything else can be pushed to 10 with an Implant if need be. You can push Intelligence up to 10 via an implant but you will lose out on some skill points before that happens.

On implants.. the Charisma implant is obviously a waste of caps and the health regeneration one is questionable (+2 or so health per second). By the time you could afford it you would be swimming in Stimpacks anyway.

Important stats = Strength, Endurance, Intelligence.
Questionable stats = Perception, Agility and Luck
Crap stat = Charisma.

Why are Perception, Agility and Luck questionable? Simple. These stats themselves are not as good as the first 3 mentioned but are not a completely bad investment. The best things these SPECIALs offer is access to certain perks. Some people will tell you to push Luck up for the sake of gambling but keep in mind its only a very minor part of the game.

Again this is just rough for an optimal build. There is no "best" character build in the game but, yes, there are bad character builds. I understand not everyone wants to create an efficient character so dont start flaming if I made you feel bad about your high Charisma/Perception build.

I should point out that Charisma actually determines the effectiveness of your companions, so a low Charisma earns you weak sidekicks. Just a thought.

Oh, sweetness! So glad I didn't dump it to 1, now that I know that. Of course, companions are optional for a good stealth build, and they tend to get in the way a whole lot (especially in close quarters).... but the extra 400+ pounds of carrying capacity (and the companion perks) I get from Boone and ED-E are very awesome. :D

E 5 <-HP
C 2 <-no use
I 6 <- skill point
A 8 <-AP,guns
L 6 <-perks, cri

Yeah, The Lou is right. So, if you have a weak character, high charisma for a strong companion could compliment you well.

My guy runs around with a maximum of 4 in all his physical traits, but a 9 in Luck and 8 in Charisma. With that kind of crit rate and friendly support, I only ever have combat problems when dealing with advlt deathclaws. It is quite hard to shoot yourself in the foot when designing you character unless you design one with a gameplay style you'll never use.
