Sneaking is broken

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 3:28 pm

Hi Forum members.

This is my third character I have created and now is broken. My first char was a sneaky mage but the sneaking was so over powered at lvl 70 I could sit beside the last guy in the labyrinth and he wouldn't notice me. I started a new char because sneaking was way to over powered. I started a pure mage char but at high lvls is pretty useless when you have to lob 30 spells to kill one enemy so I stopped playing him.

Now I started a combat oriented assassin and low and behold sneaking wasn't near as over powered and was alot of fun until I hit 100. Now skeevers can see me a mile away and that is naked, or with DB armour on, or even when I used console commands to set the lvl lower and higher to see if it would change. I had even tried to lvl it again to see if it would fix but it is like it is at zero. Can't sneak in the dark or inside or outside with out mobs seeing me very far away. Is there any fix for this because this would be char no 3 that is no fun to play. This problem happened once before with DB armour on but when I took off DB boots I could sneak again so I stopped using DB armour until it happened after a save but my char can't sneak even though he is 100 with all perks except for the last one.

I have the same problem as you it looks like. I have all the Sneak perks barring the last one and my skill is 100, I'm wearing Dragonscale Light armor (Legendary) and I cannot sneak. I go into Sneak mode, yet everything sees me no matter what I try. Looks like I can't really finish the Thieves Guild, or I'm guessing start the Dark Brotherhood quests, since sneaking is kindof integral to them...

Is there a workaround that anyone has found?

I too have 100 and all perks except the last one in sneaking but a funny thing happened where I continued playing and it seemed to work again but this is a definite bug that needs to be addressed.

Luckily I had a few perk points banked that I had to spend on my Light Armor skill. Getting hit now that I'm level 40ish hurts! My sneak still isn't working, whether I swap boots or not, so I don't know what is causing it.

Armor and other things can factor into sneaking pro or con, especially heavy armor.

This sounds silly, but even though my sneak is maxed out, too, guess what? If you think you can sneak out in the open in bright sunlight, think again. It isn't a godly cloaking device of infinite power folks. ;)

So far, I'm satisfied that everything seems to be in order with sneak. I'm using light armor and I'm seeing fairly logical situations.

Have a weird feeling that the game seems to add 1 to your sneak skill somehow, forcing it to loop around to 0 or 1 when you hit 100.

Just hit 100 myself and it's completely screwed, before that I was waltzing up behind anything in broad daylight and chopping them down, as soon as I hit 100, it's broken. :(

EDIT: I had maxed out the perk tree as well, hence being able to creep up behind someone standing in the day.

Yeah this'll svck. I just made a new char so I can focus on being a sneaky, self centered who gives-a-[censored] Woodelf. Always hard to play these since I always naturally wind up being a good guy, damn near Paladin-good. Will have to actually make an effort to be an uncaring [censored]-head, but that's also an appeal to try since it's a form of "new game" for me if ya follow.

Anyway we'll see what happens. The game does have some issues with math. A good example is when enchanting goes over 100 it utterly dorks the process and the item charge go wonk, such as if enchanting an item and then lowering the amount of damage caused, instead of the charge increasing it actually decreases almost 1 to 1 as you lower the damage.

Weird, my sneaking is at 100 with all the perks besides the first only being like 3/5. Works well for me, however you still cant just sneak-waltz up to someone in broad daylight and expect them to not see you. Im using mostly Nightengale armour though, not the DB stuff.

Actually now that I think about it Im not sure if Ive even put any of the DB armour on besides the gloves for giggles.

Most of these probs I have been having is after hitting 100. Not trying to sneak up in broad daylight but in the dungeons that are dark sometimes everytime you move the enemy will notice you and when you stop they won't notice you at all. Something is borked with sneaking after hitting 100. This problem for me comes and goes in daylight and dark but seems to be fixed by changing my boots from whatever I am wearing to something different like leather to glass and vise versa. I am not complaining that I can't sneak up in daylight but the problem is you can sneak one moment and then you move inside or outside and guess what you are seen hundreds of feet away by skeevers. Wearing all light armour and have all perks except for shadow warrior.

Sometimes I can kill dragons with a bow and they won't see me at all so in this instance it is over powered but by and by most times low level enemies like skeevers or bandits can see you from far away. I am using just low level armour except for when I change boots and no enchantments on anything to boost sneaking. Using fur armour or leather armour.

Like I said in my op my orc sneaky mage could sneak up to dragon priests at only 70 in sneaking and they wouldn't see him. Even some high lvl mobs in the daedric quest to get dawnstar I could shoot the boss and have him come right up to me and push me only to have him loose interest and walk away. This ruined the gameplay on that char and he was much less adapt at sneaking.

Something is wrong here and sneaking shouldn't be all powerful but it shouldn't gimp you either when you hit 100.

Same problem here. Before hitting 100 i was pretty much able to jump around in front of their faces without them noticing me, now they see me even at night from huge distances. My char is a pure thief and this is a huge problem! Even using "player.setav sneak 98" doesn't fix it!

[EDIT] After some more testing it seems that it mostly involves enemies that are scaling with the player. They seem to suddenly gain a lot of sneak detection or something.

ive had issues that would cause enemies to hear me when i would be crouch walking a good 10 meters away behind them with almost all sneak perks that would otherwise make me completely silent.

Also starting to move in stealth would sometimes trigger them to hear me even though stat wise i would otherwise nearly invisible and silent. Being still wouldnt get their attention of but silently walking 1 inch would cause them to have a panic attack? i have a feeling some perks just plain out dont work.

im finding the muffled spell to be more effective than boots and a perk that makes you completely silent

Even using "player.setav sneak 98" doesn't fix it!

That's a shame as I was going to stick that in a batch file so I could keep playing my DB character...

Guys... what do you think? I'm at lvl 99 sneak at the moment, halfway to 100, so any little sneaking would level me. Could it work if i use the "player.setav sneak XX" command to set sneak to a lower number before i hit 100? I don't want my sneak to be ruined :(

ACK! I hope this isn't true. I just hit 38, or 39 and my sneak is in the lower 90's. >.< Oddly I haven't played any of the DB or Thieve's guild quest line's though, but may start one of them soon. I recently made +37% stealth boots and for me stealth seems to work fairly realistic most of the time, but there are those buggy moments when some thing odd happens. I also have the full 5 points in the base skill for stealth as well.

In darkness and shadows I can be near invisible to most mobs, even at close range, if I don't move but sneaking ability drops quickly based on the amount of light involved and the direction the mob is looking.

I have had a few buggy things happen like a mob detecting me while the are facing the opposite direction and I have muffle active. I've also had mobs not detect me while I'm in melee with them ... which become's a brief encounter.

More or less the stealth seems pretty realistic to me unless a wonky moment comes up. A stealth 100 bug would nerf this toon in to the ground.

I think its true sometimes.

I've been at 100 since about level 26 or so (now 75), and most of the time it works fine.
However, there are some instances where things get very weird. Usually around enemy mages and spiders (they seem to spot you when they turn towards you) and Thalmor (they spot you from miles away, esp in embassy). Also Goldenglow estate outside.

That is with +90% sneak equip on too. Strange thing in embassy at least was when I took off the equip (+0%) they still spot me, but if I then drank a light foot potion (+25% sneak), I could jump up and down in their face and nothing happened. Same with Goldenglow estate, drinking a potion fixed it, even though my total sneak bonus would now be lower than the bonus from armor etc. Before you ask, my light/heavy are both 100 and my heavy tree maxed out (I don't use light armor, but took it for levelling purposes)

So something strange going on here.

To those of you trying "player.setav sneak 98", try "player.modav sneak -2" instead. I don't know if it will work better, but I know that modav works better than setav with CarryWeight, at least.

Does this bug occur only with patch 1.2? I have still version 1.1 and decided to keep Steam offline since I don't play any other Steam based game anyway.

This has got to be an intermittently-occurring bug (albeit one with potentially-permanent effects), as I've got a high-level stealth archer who hit 100 Sneak many play-hours ago and has never had any problems of this sort. Also, in discussion of the Skyrim port of Elys' Uncapper, I've seen mentions of Sneak continuing to function (and even appearing to continue gaining effectiveness) at skill levels over 100, so it's not a simple "100 wraps around to 0"-type overflow error.
