Sniping aspects

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 10:42 am

Im about to get NV and i was thinking about playing as a sniper type character. I was watching some videos of people sniping from long range and half the time they hit they seemed to be leading but they also got hits when it was directly on them. Do you half to lead or not.

Snipers in NV hit where you aim them.

Being an RPG, hit or miss is a dice roll based on your character's skill as well as physical aiming. I have hit when not propertly aimed (aim assist of course) and missed when right no with my cross hairs. I have not needed to lead enemies but there is bullet time in the game...I just do not know if it matters. Generally, enemies stand still enough to easily hit heads from distance and when they are aware of you, they tend to come straight towards you a lot of the time making sniper kills very easy . Sadly, you can use your sniper rifle in close quarters in this game and be nearly as effective.

Aint nothing sad about it, a scoped rifle has two areas of effectiveness, long range and point blank.

useful for all fps games

There's nothing special about rifles used for sniping in any case, they are just a tube which throws out a bullet. The same principles apply if you throw a rock.

I'm pretty certain that the game only provides for leading a moving target, not allowing for trajectory. I am assuming that it's factored in when you sight the rifle. The reason being that as you can't adjust your sights for range, and you aren't given the opportunity to sight in at a particular range, I would suggest that it's simply a straight shot.

At most of the combat ranges in the game, trajectory becomes pretty much irrelevant, and factoring it in as a game mechanic which the player has to take into account for the long sniping type situations would add a layer of complexity to the game that probably wouldn't add much for most people.

Fallout 3 was horrible for sniping. However NV is absolutely essential. Without it I have no idea what I would do. Bullet hits perfect.

When you play the game the iron sights are a bit tricky, reminds me of those last few ships at the end of a space invaders level.

Since the game isn't a full-blown FPS, being more like a dungeon-crawler with some FPS leanings, it's very generous in its physics. You sorta can lead a little and the aim assist will cover you a lot of the time, but just point and shoot.

Extremely difficult to snipe a Ghoul moving at 40 mph.

Aim where you want the bullet to go, the bullet always goes perfectly straight in this game, contrary to real-world physics.

I find in my experience that the bullet fires straight out at whatever you have in the crosshairs when you fire. There is no need to take into account bullet drop or travel time, as the game doesn't seem to care about that.

However, I DO find when sniping with a scope that it is useful to lead the target slightly because of a delay between the click to fire and it actually registering. This doesn't matter if the target is standing still or walking away or towards you, but if it's moving from side to side, it does help. I find that when I lead just slightly, the target is right under the crosshairs when the game finally realizes I shot.

Of course, that doesn't take into account the 180 degree instant direction changes that annoy me greatly...

"Sadly" because it is stupid easy. While I usually will shift to a SMG or other close quarters weapon, I could just as easily snipe heads with the sniper at point blank range. Long, medium, point blank, does not matter, the sniper owns most enemies. This is just my opinion, it is neither good nor bad really. I guess I would rather have such an all purpose, powerful weapon be harder to attain.

I love how Iron Sights is used in this game and the Sniper Rifle as well. I like looking down the barrel of a gun and knowing that the bullet will go where it's suppose to go.

The only "dice roll" is when in VATS. There is an amount of spread to weapons that can cause you to not hit directly under the crosshairs.
