Generators and flashlights are good if you lose power. Just make sure you have fuel for the generator, and it's in good working order. Otherwise...I'd say just make sure you've got enough food to last a 2-4 days, and some bottles or jugs of water on the off chance your pipes freeze. And of course a good supply of video games, movies, and books are a must. ;)

If you have to go out at all, make sure you have a snow shovel, some blankets, and some road salt (or sand, or even kitty litter--not to melt ice, but to provide traction if your car gets stuck) in the trunk of your car.

I'd say not to worry too much, but...I'm from Michigan. We call a foot of snow "Thursday" around here this time of year. :P Really, though--chances are you'll be fine.

A good amount of snow gear and sleds. Best thing is going outside after most of the snow has fallen, so fun! And basically everything Tyraa said. :P

For the most severe scenario:
Heat source - gas heater, wood burning or coal
Plenty of tinned food- Preferably things that do not need to be heated
Mobile phone array and mobile phone- constant connection

Another Michigander here - aside from the advice that Tyraa gave, I'll also ask this: what sort of generator are we talking about? Is this one that simply has a few 120 volt outlets? Or is this one that users a transfer switch?

The big issue here is this: you cannot connect your furnace to a generator using an extension cord. If you have some space-heaters, those will work with a regular extension cord. Likewise, you (probably) won't be able to power your refrigerator without a transfer switch - that means, if you are out of power for a while, your food will go bad.

Also, I'd make sure any vehicles you have are filled with gasoline before the snowstorm. If it is even really a snowstorm. :P

A sharp knife so you can cut up and serve family members, neighbors, stranded motorists, etc. when you run out of food.

Hi Neighbors....Welcome to Ypsilanti...NOW GO HOME !

To the OP in OK....don't worry. It melts. Go outside and enjoy it while you can. Get some plastic sheeting and find a hill...
I don't suppose that many folks have sleds or toboggans down there. On second thought...probly not many hills in OK either.

How much snow are you talking about? I mean, up here in mass we've already got 50" of snow still on the ground and another storm coming which is said to be bringing 15"+ .
One storm with a foot or two for you guys shouldn't be too bad unless it's coupled with freezing rain.

Oh, and make sure you shovel off your roof if it's a flat one. There's been a lot of buildings collapsing around here for that reason.

Snow shoes?

Haha, here in Wisconsin we are also getting a storm, however it's nothing out of the norm.

In line with the two other Michiganders, food, fuel for your generator, water in case your pipes burst. If you have a fireplace, get wood for that (not only because it's a valuable source of heat, but because fires are entertaining).

Do you have kids? Friends? Roommates? If you do, and you do have a fireplace, stock up on marshmallows.

Other than that, take a walk around and find what you need to operate. Make sure you can ensure your survival.

Speaking of winter storms, fellow Michiganders, I believe we're about to get blasted starting tomorrow night, so we'd better heed our own advice.

Pretty much what everyone has said. You need warm clothes, food that doesn't need to be heated, flashlights and such, and candles are a big one to me. You want to save the flashlights for when they are really necessary. All the stuff I have said is really in case the generator gives out. The type of generator is important. The one we have is too small. Our power was off a week or two ago for a while, and our generator could only really handle my dad's tv, the refridgerator, and the floor freezer. I think our tv's have a lot to do with it though. When we had regular tv's, we could watch tv in multiple rooms and use microwaves and stuff. Now, my dad and I both have sony LED-LCD's, and hardly anything will work when one of them is on. Oh, and as for day time, go outside. Make snowballs, make some vulgar snowmen(always a blast), and if you don't have hills, tie a sled or something to a truck or fourwheeler. That is pretty fun.

Just because it snows doesn't mean you're going to lose electricity. It's possible. Good to be prepared, but if you're not used to it, I suppose it would be something to be concerned with. If you're driving be careful, but don't be surprised if some Yankee passes you doing 45 mph.

Make sure your car's gas tank is full or close to full.

Indeed we are. Hopefully the snowpocalypse decides to wait it out until after I've had my job interview that afternoon, though...either that or I need to find some sled dogs for rent. :P

Get bottled water, bread, peanut butter absolute worst case scenario you lose power and your food spoils in the fridge.

Please don't run the generator inside your house. In 2008 we had a bad ice storm here and we had way to many cases of people dieing from Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

THIS.

I live in Ohio, and 2-3 inches shuts down most of the state. Of course, knowing our luck, everyone around us will get 10"+ and we'll get 1.5"-2". Ohio svcks.

Also, thanks for reminding me to fill up my gas tank lol.

These storms happen every year, usually more than once. The only thing worth noting here is that you might lose power, and you probably wont be able to leave your house. Its probably too late now, but if you wanted to then get some food, but these things clear up for the most part in about 4 days max, so your not in any real trouble. Flash lights are good too.

Sounds like Summer for us Canadians ;)

You'll be fine, just stay inside and keep warm. Candles, a couple friends and some drinks will get you through, a generator if that's your thing too.
