Some profound statistics about Skyrim's PC community.

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 9:10 am

D00d! You think those statistics are crazy? Welcome to The Elder Scrolls series! As Freddo the Mod pointed out, there are people who are die-hard fans but have never finished the main quests or take years to finish them. Would you believe, I played Daggerfall and Morrowind for a billion hours each (slight exageration...) and never finished their main quest? Oblivion is the only TES game I ever completed, and I still never did all the guild/side quest lines. Arena, I may or may not have finished, but I did get pretty far (I think my HD had crashed ).

The games were originally designed so you could have an entirely new experience with each playthrough, and some people spent more time planning out and making new characters than actually playing the game.

Some people get into modding and don't really actually play the game much, but just get enjoyment from the creation process. You can thank those people for constantly making cool stuff for your favorite TES games. Just wait, the Skyrim mods are just getting started...

I think most people haven't finished the MQ because they want to save and cherish it for for later.

I only complete the MQ after completing the rest of the game. That makes Alduin the final boss. Needless to say, I was bummed at how easy he was.

Fascinating figures from the OP. I wonder if many players are like me, putting off completing the main quest, as I don't want the game to 'finish'? I know there will still be lots to do when the MQ is over, but as I keep completing sections of it, like a good film, I don't want it to end! So I dip in and out of the main quest to prolong the immersion.

The statistics posted by the OP in some ways resemble how I play, but I think everyone has different reasons and I'm sure the console market has similar (or at least equally strange) statistics.

In my case, I play Skyrim casually as time permits. I"m perfectly okay with putting the game down for days or weeks until I get another "off" night where I can fire it up again. This is the #1 reason why I did not get the full experience out of playing WoW because I could not commit to the ridiculous guild requirements for when to be online, how often to be online, how long to play, etc. The single-player RPG is a breath of fresh air for me and a better value.

I too have put off finishing the MQ for reasons I can't really explain. If I had to guess I would say the biggest reason is that I have been finding tons of other things to do, and since there is no time limit on the MQ, it's easy to get back to later. Another reason is maybe I don't want to feel as though the game is over, as a previous poster also mentioned.

I haven't finished the main quest, but that's mostly because I want to finish all the guild quests and jarl-quests first. I just don't think I want to finish the main quest yet. I was more interested in the FG quest in oblivion as well, and this time I want to do all the guilds. I also tend to do a sort of dead is dead thing, and some of the MQ locations are a bit rough.

Hahaha, yeah right. Skyrim's writing is some of the worst I've seen in a game in a long time. I mean [censored], I found Oblivion to be more engaging.
congrats on having a personal opinion? do you think that makes you special? I completely disagree, and the writing of skyrim was very good. opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one. dont for one second think your opinion means anything to anyone but yourself

I think you are being a little dismissive of the DB storyline to bolster your opinion. You have put some thought into your point but the DB one seems a little disingenuous

I had the same kind of issue with that storyline. The storyline itself is kinda cool. I liked the set up except for a minor issue with how you became listener. But seriously, no one cares about the ending. And considering what happens and who you kill, it should have a major impact on the civil war and for that matter all of Skyrim. Not even a mention by said faction. It's the same thing with the other quests. FG and MG are both too short but have potential, but even if the story pacing wasn't off, the fact that no one notices anything despite all that's going on is motivation destroying.

I find it more concerning that only a little over half of the gaming community has topped level 25.

I guess most of us just keep rerolling their character?
Besides, I heard the best gameplay is between 15 and 35/40 and most people reroll well before that.

Skyrim has by far the least interesting MQ of all the TES games.I simply have no interest in finishing it.

Skyrim was the first MQ I finished, the last two Elder Scrolls didn't hold my attention very well. One looked like Malacath threw up half the population and the other one's combat caused me to break my computer with my keyboard... which resulted in me getting a console.

But then again, I say that while drinking a Bacon Shake from Jack in the Box.

My taste in things may be distorted.

I personally have re started the game several times since I purchased it in November. Here's why:

1.) Too many DTC when the game first came out.

2.) Uninstalled and reinstalled it numberous times, because of various problems.

3.) Had to convert from Windows 7 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit, to get full use of the 4 GB's of RAM; (to which I have actually 6 GB RAM on my system)

4.) After reading some of the threads on here the ending isn't really worth doing: no fan fair, no reward, only zilch.

5.) Because I am busy trying to write a back story for my Female Nord character, which I won't be able to share with others on this website.

How about that?

Yeah OP, doesn't mean a bloody thing.

I had Oblivion for 3 years before I sat down and defeated the main quest. I had more hours in that game than I will ever know.

There are plenty of RPGs that I never beat, just because the point is more about playing a role in a place I can't reach.

With regards to PC players:
  • Only 28% have completed the main quest.
This could mean 2 things people are taking their time and exploring all facets of the game or it highlights how average the main quest line is.

Heh, only reason I beat the main quest so quickly is because my brother came home from Iraq and I didn't want him to see part of it before he got to play. I'm generally one of those players who plays the main quest slowly-- as in, unwrap the main quest. Smell the main quest to please the scent palate. Break off small square of main quest. Lick it. Take tiny bite. Let bite melt in mouth. Repeat. *chomps chocolate bar* I feel better now. XD

I never did finish the main quest in Oblivion. Never got past the licking stage, I guess (being... mugging an elf for a book).

Grezz...are you from the Elder Council? Your style seems incredibly familiar....

Point 4-should be that PC players tend to be older so are busier and also are browsing the mods and forums. They are also on a platform that has way more features and thus distractions than the consoles. Put these together and you have a lot of time out of game. You also have all the time spent trying to fix the game to specific settings or repair the 'damage' a new patch or mod may have done.

For the mainquest part: I am more than 300 hours in Skyrim without finishing it once :). Why? Because so far I did not have a character for whom the role of Dragonborn did fit (srsly, my assassin couldn't care less about the fate of the world).

To the OP: I don't know is this has been mentioned already but many pc players are also busy installing and testing dozens of mods, not to mention the fact that many are "creating" mods too(and that eats a huge amount of time)

Took me about 300 hours before I got around to starting the main quest. The main quest isn't the best, but I did end up enjoying it more than Oblivion's. It was decent enough.

Also made sure to do the main quest dead last, as I prefer exploration and side quests. Could spend hours just looking at stuff.
