Someone in the game has had a past history with the Courier?

In Primm, Johnson Nash claims that some mysterious drifter turned down the courier job because he saw the character's name next on the list. Does anyone have any idea why?

The answer to this is revealed by the robot Yes Man in a rather convoluted explanation later on in the game. Johnson Nash only says what he says out of speculation, not because he "knows".

Spoiler
Yes Man reveals that he orchestrated the plan to take the Chip. They planted their man at Mojave Express so he could give them a name. He intentionally turned down the job, passing it on to you, as part of their plan. Not because it was "you", but because they wanted to be sure who would have the job.
