Does it matter? I mean all these Bethesda games send assassins after you whether you're good or evil. Maybe it's a relative of that last dragon you killed?

Tell a guard of it.
He will tell you that it might be the Dark Brotherhood, and that you should write a will.
He directs you to Ebonheart for more information.

Not really... It depends on what quests you did and the outcome of the quests and possible random people you killed... Sometimes people just want you dead. You can look through your quests and figure out all the quests you did where you might have angered somebody, that would be the most likely candidate then.

Is there anyone who you've stolen from? Or anyone who is related to anyone you've killed? That's your likely culprit.

Dont the assasins have a contract on them when you loot their bodies. I think it has the persons name at the bottom. At least the one who tried to kill me did.

The name refers to the head of the DB not the person that wants you dead.

Under the hood, noone wants you dead. Radiant Story just detected that you picked up/stole a specially marked item and boom! You get a DB assassin or hired thugs coming your way. Do away with them and that's that.

Strange thing is, once that Dark Brotherhood contract is on you (and signed by Astrid), you can join them without problems.

don't want to ruin the fun, but they are completely random. they do not appear, because you stole something or did something bad. it is a completely random thing to make sure that the player knows that there is a dark brotherhood. i had one coming after me on a character as i was like ... lvl 2. i went from riverwood to whiterun.

Good call. Was thinking of doing the same while waiting for DLC.
Simply too much fun right now with my Samurai-ish character.

Not all encounters are random. ;)

They should have a note on them, depending on which encounter it is.

On one character, I got the DB assassins very early, so it really narrowed down the possibilities for what triggered it - the only possibility I could figure was one/both of the traveling nobles I had killed on the road.
