Something wrong with my laptop...

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 12:47 am

I'm not sure if this should be here (since I'm not sure if it's actually Skyrim's fault), but I got BSOD earlier, and an error message popped up when it rebooted saying something about AMD drivers failing.
I did a Google, and ended up cleaning up and reinstalling all of my graphic cards drivers. Now however, the highest resolution option I have is 1152x864 (I didn't even know you could do this?), and there is no 1600x900 (what it was previously).
Also, a dxdiag fails to detect any graphics adapter, having n/a everywhere apart from the current resolution one.
Lastly, the catalyst control center from AMD says that it cannot install due to incompatible software on my computer.

I'm running an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, but I'm not exactly an expert, and have no idea what to try next.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I can't help with the lost choices of resolutions for your laptop, however, I will point out that an HD 5650 isn't among the stronger laptop cards availalble, and 1600 by 900 was really pushing things with it anyway, in my opinion. Your problem isn't necessarily in direct relation to Skyrim, although the system failure error code is the important thing that you omitted, and no gaming PC should ever allow Microsoft's dumb default of that auto-reboot to remain in effect.

If there's no one here with direct experience with that same graphics card, you may want to visit the Rage 3D forums.

Ok, thanks for the reply. Where would the error message have been displayed? There was no obvious code or anything that I noticed. And I didn't necessarily use 1600x900 for gaming, but it makes it look so much sharper when I'm doing anything else, so I'd just like to have the option back.
Thanks again.

There are examples of the material displayed on the Blue Screen among the tutorial pages that Microsoft has on their site describing what the BSODs are all about, including resetting the auto-reboot to a "stop" to allow reading what is written each time.

Thanks again, I've found a page on the Microsoft website that seems to get pretty in depth on how to read the Blue Screen. I'll take a look through that and see where it leads me.
Lastly, is there any way to view the information from the last BSOD, or is that not possible?

There should be a crashlog, but I'm having a massive brain fart, and can't seem to run anything about it down in the nooks and crannies of my memory. I usually take a nap these days, and was too busy today, so I may end up hitting the sack a bit early -- not exactly with the chickens, but before the 10 o'clock news.

The minidumps, or something, folder is sparking some sort of weak light in my mind. Maybe that's what you're looking for? If so, I can't say where that folder is. Been too long since I messed with it myself...

I've found the minidump folder, and searching around the internet suggests that it the right place to look, but the folders empty. Also the programme BlueScreenViewer has othing regarding a system failure. I guess I'll just leave it and see if it does it again (maybe when I reinstalled the drivers it fixed the problem that caused the Blue Screen originally) and if it does have a look then. I've also turned off the automatic reboot after a system failure. Unfortunately I'm still stuck with this resolution :/
Thanks a lot for the advice though.

Apparently the Windows Event Viewer isn't always running by default in all versions of Windows 7, but when it is, it can find and display the matching reports generated during a Blue Screen "Event".

If dxdiag isn't recognizing your card, then something went wrong with the driver install you did. This also explains the resolution cap.

Uninstall current drivers, use Driver Sweeper in Safe-mode to clean left over files.

Then make sure you download the correct drivers and install them again.

Good luck!

Well I've done what you suggested, but apparently AMD doesn't like Toshiba, and the drivers you get straight from their website are incompatible. I've used a driver detector program instead, and installed the drivers that it first suggested, and then the latest ones (uninstalling and cleaning in between), and still my resolution is capped. It also still isn't shown in dxdiag. I really don't know why the drivers aren't installing correctly, but I'm not far off formatting my hard drive. There's not a lot on here to lose, and I don't know what else to do.
Thanks again for all of the help.

I have a laptop myself; I can install the latest AMD drivers for my card but they don't work well, so I always have to reinstall the driver that was initially installed when I bought the computer. I can find this driver on the web-site of the computer, Packard Bell in my case. I suggest that you go to the Toshiba web-site and search their support page for your laptop; maybe you'll find the driver you need there. ;)
