Today was the greatest day evar!! I picked up my copy of FO:NV CE for the PC from Best Buy today. I quickly opened the package before leaving the store to verify that I had a game disk and what-not and I did. I was also given a FO3 poster and a FO3 Bobble head (both items were originally in the FO3 CE lunch box but Best Buy was giving them out with your CE purchase of NV. Which was awesome.

I come home, give my daughter a bottle and put her to bed. I fire up the computer. Install NV only to be greated with a large "FU!" from my computer.

It doesn't work anymore. Not NVs fault. But more of my computer being a giant POS.

So, saddened by all this. I'm gonna go drink a beer, shelve FO:NV and go to bed. Probably never to be played because I can't afford a new rig.

I know my thread has no point. But, I just wanted to share my sadness. What a way to return to the forums after a several month break.

Solution: buy a console. If you can't afford to upgrade a computer every 3-4 years, you're better off buying an Xbox or PS3--better investment in the long run.

I'm not a big proponent of handing out technical advice. Though I prefer PC gaming, I often tell people, if you can adapt to controllers and the slightly higher price of games, consoles are designed to do pretty much just gaming and might be right up your alley, especially if you cannot afford a decent PC.

But whatever the problem with your PC is, it may be something simple. I don't know what the "FU!" is (a blue-screen?). But a little more info (and sleep) might turn things around for you.

I upgraded my computer from a POS and it didn't break me... just over 300 bucks to be able to play this at max settings...
all you need to do is know where to look.
I have a friend who is a computer genius and helped me here.

Buy the hardware seperate so worth every penny.

Edit: I forgot I got some of the parts by trading my PS2 slim to my friend and he bought some of it. It was a very good trade off.

Disagree. The PC can do a lot more than play games, and since most games these days are cross-platform you don't have to upgrade much more often than you have to buy a new console. Plus, PC games are a lot cheaper...I get most games anywhere from $5 - $40...typically somewhere in the middle. Not only that, but you can oftentimes fix your PC yourself instead of needing to send it off somewhere. Besides, if you're like me and own PCs and consoles you can't stand playing first-person games with a controller.

I also kind of think it's rude to tell people to fix their problems by changing platforms...it's really not helpful.

No, I know what "FU" is... but your PC "FU-ing" you doesn't mean a thing. Did you get a memory error? Did it restart automatically? What EXACTLY did it do to give you trouble. That's what I'm looking for.

Yeah, I built this rig from the ground up. But, did so several years ago I know what to look for and what to buy. But, right now, rebuilding my rig isn't currently in the budget.

I have a console. Several infact. A Wii which I never play cause I don't like it and a 360 which I play quite frequently. But I only play certain games on the 360. Some games are just not meant to be played on a console such as FO3, and FO:NV just happen to be two.

Realistically, I'm more than likely going ot have to wait till Christmas this way I can gather the necessary parts to ply NV the way its meant to be played, on a PC. At least there will be some good mods out by then.

So, you don't need/want help getting your PC to work, then?

I forgot to tell you what the PC is doing.

Nothing.

Thats what its doing. Just sitting there. Frozen. No errors, no nothing. Just sits there. Then I get the "This program is not responding" message and it just continues sitting there. Hell, when I booted the thing up the first time I got the, "This drive doesn't exist, please make sure there is a disk in the drive." on my HDD. Which at first, I found funny. But the second and third time I found it annoying.

I guarantee my HDD is bad or going bad. Maybe I'll just buy a new HDD this weekend and see if it fixes the issue.

You know, the other thing I don't get is that I buy a game and it comes with a disk and yet...I still need Steam to install it. The computer has decided to do something and I see Steam is installing FO:NV but its doing so rather slowly. Why then do I need a disk if its not installing off of that? What is on this disk? It says there is over 6 gigs of info on this disk. What is it doing?

Dunno, mine runs at 1.8Ghz, which I've been told is too slow, so I'm over clocking it on the weekend to the minimal 2.0Ghz if it won't run FONV normally
(the ventilation fan ought to handle it, and otherwise it'll tell me soon enough)

Also, I know this kid with a stupendous trading reputation on Tweakers who can get me basically anything at reduced pricing -always new, second hand purchases..

Just find someone like that in your neighborhood who can get you the the parts, otherwise I can if you want.

Steam is being used for DRM and distribution of patches and downloadable content. You should be able to install off the disc rather than download from Steam...the game files are on the disc.

It does sound like you have some kind of HDD issue. The first thing I would try is replacing the power and data cables to the drive, or at least pulling them off and re-seating them...mostly because it's really easy to eliminate cables as a possibility in your troubleshooting. There are also some HDD diagnostics that might help. If you can get access to another computer to burn a CD you could download and burn the http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/. You can boot off that and test your drives and your memory (memory problems are always a possibility when things are acting "funny.")

She's doing good. Getting big. Always smiling and wants to walk more than crawl. She is only 8 months old too. She is the best thing I've ever made. I love her so much.
